How does negotiating contractor compensation work? I’m coming from a FT role so have never done this before. It’s a non engineering role so I couldn’t find much on blind. The recruiter didn’t provide any level (eg IC3) but I’m not sure if contractor roles have levels. They offered $40/hr, which I estimated as $80k annually (assuming working 20000 hours), that’s slightly lower than what I currently make but if I add in my medical and other FT employee benefits, the fb offer is probably much lower. I like the actual role though, and am not happy with my current company. Fb is also a better brand. I’d like $55/hr but I’m not sure if that’s too high of a jump. Thanks in advance for you thoughts!
It’s negotiable. My contractors negotiated. But flexibility will depend on importance of the role, how much they want you, how replaceable you are, and their budget.
Thanks! Someone else here mentioned - would I get better results by dealing with the HM (fb employee) or with the contracting company? I understand that the contracting vendor takes a cut, but wondering whether I’m negotiating for the vendor to take a smaller cut, or for Fb to pay more (and the vendor keeps the same %)
Oh didn’t realize you were working with a vendor. If the using a vendor, they may have already agreed on a price with fb so you’d be negotiating with them to take a smaller cut.
Vendors can end up taking 30-40% of your rate so I do think you have room for negotiation
Thank you! Would you recommend I first negotiate with vendor, or with fb manager? (for example - first ask fb for higher hourly, if they decline then ask vendor to take lower rate)
YES-you can negotiate with the vendor. I've done it many, many times. I've contracted for years. #contractor

I should also mention I get 10% performance based bonus, but I’m not including that in this because my bonus is mostly dependent (like 80%) on whether the larger group meets business goals so it’s not guaranteed
