Convince hiring manager to give SDE L62 offer.

I have an SDE L61 offer from Microsoft.

The job posting was for L62. I felt that all the interviews went very well. However, the recruiter said that this offer is for L61. The recruiter also said that the hiring manager decides the level and he can't do anything about it.

Is is worthwhile to discuss with my hiring manager why she thinks I should be hired at L61 and not L62?

I have a MS in computer science degree in USA with 3 YOE. Should I push hard for L62?

What points should I discuss with my hiring manager/recruiter to make my point for an L62?

Don't accept 61 lol... Interns get 60 nowadays with just their 3 months experience. 3 year I'd expect 62 for sure. Negotiate aggressively using Amazon

I think 61 is appropriate for your level of experience. It’s unlikely they’ll level you higher. Ask for more stock and base instead.

3 yoe is l61, you will get crushed in reviews at l62

Thanks for the reply. Can you give some insights on how the expectations from an L62 differ from a L61?

Just from experience, a lot of people are at l62 knocking on senior. At senior the expectations are to mentor people, be tech/design lead for the team, represent in cross team collab etc.

The level of job opening has 0 bearing on offer at Microsoft

I haven’t seen people with 3 yoe hired as 62 even after MS. It’ll be difficult.

Microsoft pay really bad for low level engs, if you didn’t negotiate well in the beginning

I thought MS doesn’t publicly divulge the levels. Are you sure the job posting had it?

I had asked a friend to look at the internal careers site. She said that it is L62.

You should aim for a higher TC. They are flexible to alter the level based on that from my experience.

Lowball offer. New grads at 59 are getting $150K/3.5 years. Definitely negotiate

You can use aws offer to ask for higher level and more stock grant. But for 3 year experience 61 seems right.

Is the amazon offer terrible or for a bad organization? Curious why you’d focus on Microsoft versus amazon. Is your role / field just much better suited to what you’d be doing there?

Both the offers are from core services team in AWS and Azure and offer similar services. Don't feel comfortable giving out the team names. The benefits (ESPP, yearly bonus, work life balance etc.) are better at Microsoft, hence wanted to join Microsoft.
