I just started a new position and it is a bit of a mess. It's in startup mode and needs lots of process flows to be ironed out. I have created a few SOPs (standard operating procedures). I have not published them all so others can see. Right now it's on my computer only. Would you advise I publish to look good for boss or don't because it's easier to replace me?
IMO publish them. Will make you look good regardless and shows you take initiative. You saw something that needs done and/or improved without being asked did it. A person like that is invaluable and makes them harder to replace. The opposite is true as well. Someone who waits until told why to do isn’t worth much and easily replaced.
That's exactly what I am thinking. As long as I continuously find opportunities to create value and more importantly stay above my competition it only helps me.
Exactly and not to mention if/when you interview elsewhere it’s a great story for a behavior question!
By "competition" I assume you mean your "teammates" not your actual competition. Yeah?
Yes. I'm competing against my team for higher roles.
It’s a good idea to make the suggestion, jest get permission to do it before burning hours on the project. As one who has written hundreds of SOPs in my career, no matter how good they are, they’re valuable only when people use them.
...I see you refer to your teammates as competition. Make sure you’re doing this with the right intention. Write sop’s so everyone on the team can contribute to them and also help everyone on the team improve process. If you’re writing these to make yourself look better/smarter than your colleagues that could backfire
I understand where you're coming from. I want to look like I am capable of bringing more value to the team and therefore I might be better eligible for a role with more responsibility. Of course the organization cares about healthy competition. Thanks for your time.
“I want to look like I am capable” - spoken like a true marketer. Might I suggest just “be capable” - which sounds like you are.
Is it your job to write these?
No. I create for myself. Keeps me organized. It's not my job to upload neither. I just would like to go above and beyond.
Just make sure you’re not stepping on the toes of someone who’s job it is to write those
