what is it like to work at Cruise? How are the people, culture, work, compensation? I am looking at an opportunity to work there.
I'd be interested to know post GM culture and morale too
GM is very much not involved, so the culture remained quite startupy. People are very smart, generally good people. Work is fun, if you are into independence and solving hard problems. Snacks are mediocre though
How many hours do people spend at work on average? How much does a software engineer make in total comp on average?
8 hours 5 days a week is what’s expected and encouraged. We are quite big now, so I can’t speak for everyone, but it’s normal working hours. As for comp, it depends on what flavour of an engineer you are and your experience. Whatever is posted on Glassdoor sounds about right to me.
Cruise is great! Seriously nice and incredibly smart people. We are growing very fast but a main goal is to keep our culture and I think it's working. I agree that the snacks are mediocre (vegan) but the free lunch and dinners are generally pretty great!
How do GM people feel about your free snacks?
They’re not allowed in the building

Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
I know 3, 4 people who interviewed and got offers from them but decided to join other companies in this domain (like NIO, etc). They were all software engineers.
Uh oh! Any specific reasons why they did so?
