I live in SF and see Cruise vehicles frequently. The problem is that every time I see one, it’s clear that the safety driver is actually driving. Not all trips are for AV testing, and the CA intervention stats suggest a ton of SF miles, but I’m just surprised that I have yet to see one actually autonomous per the standard I would define autonomous. Anyone else have a similar or differing perspective?
Was just thinking the same recently, I always check and always notice the same thing
From the outside, it's impossible to tell for certain whether they are autonomous, but most of the time, yes, they are.
Their safety drivers are instructed to make it look like the driver is driving even when it's autonomous. But its easy to tell the difference
Interesting, any idea why they might instruct that?
Saw one in SF on Wed and there were 2 guys driving. This was near Divisadero & Geary
I assume I do, unless their safety drivers are horrible drivers
Yes, they're fucking slow and dumb.
