Appeared for an onsite on Tuesday and received verbal offer from recruiter on Wednesday. I didn't do well in a system design round so got down leveled to software engineer (applied for senior software engineer role). I'm a staff software engineer at NI. I have following questions : 1) What is the typical experience in years for a software engineer in cruise and a senior software engineer ? I have 5 years of experience so is it okay if I try to negotiate for a senior software engineer role ? 2) I was told that the compensation range for software engineer is around 150 - 200k (cash compensation), additionally RSU + relocation bonus. Any advice on compensation range (base + bonus + RSU) that I should target for ? 3) Since I will be joining Embedded systems group. So any feedback about the team, their culture, work life balance etc ? TC : 95K in Austin. YOE : 5 years ( 3 in US) Yet to get the final offer from Cruise
NI = National instruments I guess. I know someone who had 3 years of experience and they could negotiate for a senior software engineer role. I can't speak for embedded systems/ hardware though.
My offer was 185 base, 65 bonus and 65 RSUs a year for a Sr role. Sign on was 15k
Did you ended up joining ? 65 RSUs a year for how many years ?
Standard - 4 years. No, didn’t join. I make more at Tesla. Cruise’s SRUs are not liquid.
Interesting Cruise doesn’t give GM rsus.
Because they want to go public by thenself
Of course it's okay if you try to negotiate for a senior role. The worst that could happen is the recruiter says it's not possible. If the recruiter gave you numbers for base range before you gave an expected or desired number, hoooo boy. I'd say "I think 200 is a good starting point" in response. AFAIK our relo program was cancelled a few months ago, but if you get it in writing then 🤷♂️ I'm not on embedded systems, but the SRE team seems to be fine (I'm relatively new) And yes, to anybody who's wondering, we get Cruise RSUs (which are paper money). GM is a majority stakeholder but Cruise has been privately owned since the Honda and SoftBank investments.
Wow NI comp is bad. "No income" is not a joke
@OP- did you end up taking the offer or still at NI?
Joined Microsoft
Any idea how is NI doing now? Got an interview call and just being pro active to get some information about the company. YoE - 3.
If they say range "150 - 200k base" ur negotiating starting point is 200 for base. Just like when u give a range of 130-170. They always offer u 130. What's NI btw?
National Instruments.
Okay. Sorry I don't know exactly about cruise. But can give u general negotiating tips
