Hello lovely people of Blind. Would you please shed some light on the current state of work life balance and culture at Cruise ? Do people often work late and on weekends ? How many hours do you work per week ? Do you get a lot of pressure from your manager/management ? What about WFH ? How’s the synergy and communication across teams ? Are people overall friendly and nice 🙂? Gracias~
Nah, usually late side of 8 to early side of 6 except Fridays when I leave closer to 4 or 5. Probably 45 hours a week?
I could probably work less if I wanted but I like my job 🤷♀️
Which company did you come to Cruise from and is the WLB better compared to where you were? I am not talking about TC.
As everything for Cruise it really depends on your team. But honestly I see people coming later and leaving way earlier than other companies of that size. Most are still usually checking in//working a little bit after leaving. Overall very relaxed and no stigma if you leave early

Copy pasting. Facepalm
Cruise as a company is not WFH friendly. Not many on my team WFH. WLB depends on your team. I work on infra and it’s not pretty. There is a lot of tech debt and a good chunk of your time will be spent fighting fire. WLB is the no 1 issue raised during our survey. So it’s definitely a concern. There are moments where I have to work in the evening and on weekends because I can’t get stuff done due to meetings and interviews. I’ve done 55+ hours/week in the past so be ready for it. I worked for companies that offer dinner perks and it was served at 6-6:30PM. At cruise, dinner is served at 7:30 so the expectation to stay later is there. Hiring many people in short period of time has its downsie. There’s room for improvement in team chemistry and synergy. Overall, it’s a good place for those who have the flexibility to put in longer hours.
There is no WLB at Cruise. Obviously it depends on the team, but the culture in general is chaotic, stressful, and toxic.
I understand the stressful part as it is a competitive environment. How about the chaotic and toxic?

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

I work as a machine learning engineer. Overall I’m happy with the culture when it comes to WLB. I personally work pretty relaxed hours, maybe 8 something to 6 most days. I do tend to put in a little time from home at night or on weekends but that’s more the nature of my work (experiments need babysitting and take a while). Generally it’s team dependent and I know some people who love working long hours and do so. I don’t think there’s a stigma though if you don’t do that. WFH has recently become much more accepted as we’ve grown, but I think in general it’s preferred you’re in the office in my org (consequence of hardware). That being said I do work from home maybe once every one to two weeks. I think communication across teams at the IC level is good, at the management level it’s a little more disjointed and I think they know it and are working on it. People are definitely friendly and collaborative.
8 something to 6 something is relaxed hours? Damn
Do you put in more than 50 hours per week ?
