Current Base Salary Too High for Facebook

So I've gone through the entire interview process at Facebook. I was very upfront with the recruiter, before starting the interviews, about my current base salary range. Now they're telling me, after passing the interviews, that my base is "way too high" and that even a $15k hit to my current base is too high. What gives? I was interviewing for a Data Center Operations Engineer position and my current base is $170k with 10 years experience.

Unfortunately, the recruiter couldn't give me any firm numbers, sign on bonus, equity, base, etc, but only stating my current numbers were "way too high".

That is bullshit. Ask them to give an offer or move on

Ask how far too high it is. Get their number. One of my favorite lines is, "Surely you have a budget." If they say yes, then ask what it is. They probably won't tell you, but it moves the conversation away from your current base. If they say no, then you have a red flag and perhaps an opportunity.

An extra $15,000 is absolutely nothing compared to the value you bring. They're negotiating with you.

$170K base for this position is too high. How is the total comp look?

Still "negotiating" it's not looking too good though. The recruiter won't give me any firm numbers but they're saying that it would be in the ballpark of 120k base, 10k signing, ~80k RSU.

Please don't get me wrong. Fb engineering vs and fb operations engineer is a little different in terms of salary.

      What's the vesting on the 80k ?

      Ask for a written offer.

I believe it's 1 year for the vesting. I'm definitely starting to understand the engineering vs operations engineer. I think I'm going to have to walk away from this one, unfortunately. Kind of a bummer since I was looking forward to this opportunity. I was very transparent from the beginning about my salary requirements, and it's after interviewing with everyone they tell me all of this. I'm not too happy with the Facebook recruiter.

Make your stand. Tell 20k more than what you are expecting and say its final.

^^^ You don't know what level he is coming in at. Depending on how he did in the interview, you may get a different level which have different comp bands.

Just don't take the offer if it does not provide the right motivation for you.
Whatever they consider "too high" is meaningless.
Your current comp should be meaningless as well, but for them (and apparently it is).

FB's logic is that they try to bring people with similar experience at the same-ish base and total comp to be "fair" to the other team members. They also bring you in at market value. You get more bonus and RSU if you perform better. It's bullshit. Look on Glassdoor and compare your salary with the industry in your area and see if you're inline or higher than industry average for your role. If you are higher than the average, stay where you are cause you likely won't get more than what you make from FB. They're getting more corporate as each day passes.

The recruiter obviously had numbers but wouldn't share them. I wouldn't doubt if they were trying to get me back down as much as possible, but I told them that I want to see the total comp. I didn't give them any firm numbers back, but they have a rough idea of my current total comp. So I guess we'll see what they come back with.

they are fucking with you. I know people that get paid more. I provide a list of salaries or offer letters in the past with higher pay, and move on if they don't pay.

I've never ever seen a DC Ops tech make that much. you are either a badass or an amazing negotiator (or both) that said you'll likely have to come down to the 130-150 range in my experience out there. good luck!
