Hey all, I have been a data analyst for over 6 years and have made a comfortable living in Dallas, TX. I have recently been completing certifications and working on personal projects with machine learning to try to break into the data science field. My worry is that data science is being thrown around a lot for a lot of different areas of work and it is not concrete what you may actually be doing in a given data science position. My next worry is the stability and longevity of the data science field as a whole considering it is relatively new. Should I stick to the field of data analytics and move more into management or try to make the switch to data science? All thoughts and questions and opinions welcome. TLDR: Should I stay in Data Analytics and try to move into management? Or make the switch to Data Science? TC: 105k
Just move to California. A data scientist is a data analyst who lives in Cali.
😂 funny but true. And they have a condescending attitude towards other real DS who are not in Cali lol
I think you’re describing Joma 😁
My company is having a really hard time filling open DS positions in London. We’re having to work with finance because our salary range is not high enough to get anyone with experience. So I would say, anecdotally, DS is in very high demand right now. As for the future, I left my crystal ball in my other pants.
Fair enough! Thanks for the input!
Data scientist = Data analyst in most places. There was a lot of unnecessary hype created by news articles few years back when they claimed it was the “sexiest job of the 20th century”. After that companies started rebranding analyst roles as scientist roles
I think you're already a Data Scientist, I have barely touched predictive analytics in practice in 2 years as a Data Scientist. All I did was multiple linear regression and clustering and a lot of descriptive analytics/product optimization.
I recommend getting to know more about the data scientist role by researching it. Ideally through mentors or having an informal conversation with someone in the field. In addition, you can take some free courses from edex to see if you really can see yourself in the job since the coding and stats is different than the data analyst role. If you find yourself enjoying the experience, then yes... make the change.

That’s what is tough. I really enjoy this field a whole and neither is better in my mind. Im excited to do either. Hoping to hear some opinions on people’s experiences if they’ve been in this position.
There’s some ml in analytics but not much
