Let's say I want to land a swe role in 6 months. I've had good exposure to the data engineering side in my career so I'm decently familiar with pipelines, databases, unit testing, AWS, version control, APIs, etc. all in python. Just... not at swe level or quality I think What should I focus on most in the next few months for hirability? Leetcode? Building side projects? Picking up another language? Taking moocs/YouTube on data structures and algos? Apply right now to SWE roles anyway and see what I'm missing? I feel that working at LinkedIn/Airbnb/Netflix would be dope, but any decent place with good wlb is an option
Leetcode and sde project. Forget moocs/picking another language. Also, avoid Netflix. Should be obvious.
Gotcha, thanks for the clear response And now I know to avoid Netflix, wasn't obvious enough for me I guess
Why do you want to leave Data Science?
From my short experience on the data engineering side I learned i enjoy building data products end-to-end, but also realized that data science is most useful if I can build and automate processes that surface insights to everyone, not just doing things in a locally in a notebook. I think DS is trending towards the latter (or has been there for a while, idk), and I think my career options will narrow to analytics/strategy manager or glorified analytics person or something if I stay in the field for a few more years. If I wanted to be more on the business side, this would make sense. But I still want to get deeper on the tech side. Note I mean DS in the more modern sense, and not in the research/applied scientist sense. Im probably not smart enough for that 😅 but either way I think most companies don't need that level of quant skills and most business problems can be solved by importing something in python With swe experience comes job security, more TC, MLE possibilities, data tech manager down the line, who knows. Swe+ds experience would be a great combo
Thanks. Definitely SWE has more jobs. Good luck!
