Data science is such an evolving field that the expectations from data scientists has increased exponentially recently. They are expected to know scripting languages, statistical tools, stakeholder manager, deep learning, machine learning, big data, etc etc. But I see software engineers do similar stuff they were doing 10 years ago (please correct me if I am wrong). Interviews are still based on python or java coding, sorting algorithms etc as they were years ago when I graduated from college. I have spent a few years in data science but I feel like I am unable to cope up with the pace with which this field is evolving. Further, software engineers get paid so much higher. The most reputed companies are all software. Should I switch to software engineering? How difficult will it be?
Yea, pretty much. I realized this on my first day as a software engineer, not after years of heartache.
Thanks, @no_scrubs. I am so done with data science. I study SQL data warehousing, they ask me R statistical modeling. I study R, they ask me python data manipulation. I study python, they ask me stakeholder management and presentation. I prepare that, they ask me machine learning algorithms. Damn, it is a never ending cycle. Can you let me know how do I get started with software engineering. I am not from this domain. I am ready to invest time and energy, but looking for a strategic plan with high chances of yielding results.
The easiest way to enter is to do frontend development. Learn javascript/html/css and then apply to jobs. Sign up for this person's courses: https://youtu.be/paggDYlG6QU (the links to his courses are in the description of this youtube video).
Not to mention requiring masters and PhD degrees just for fun, even though it’s not necessary at all
A lot of the evolution is hype. A data scientist, whose goal is to derive business value from data, does not need deep learning. That's more of a machine learning engineer thing. If they are asking that of you in interviews, that it a clue that they think of you as more of an engineer.
100% agree with you. I feel most companies have rebranded traditional Business Analytics to Data Science. The scope and impact will always be limited in a top software company compared to SWEs.
