I’ve been ds (product analytics) at fb for 3 yrs (currently ic5, TC ~230k), and wanting to explore outside opportunities, esp interested in roles at google. After reading the job description, I believe the product analyst DS role is most aligned with to my experience, but with some stretch I can also interview for the engineering DS role (I have ms in stats and some experience in ML). Can any googler share the difference between these two roles in terms of their compensation and types of work? I’d also want to know how many such opportunities exist in google sf/San Bruno offices, thanks!

engineering ds is better, but it’s more selective and requires different set of skills.

    Good luck

At FB a core ds engineer will get roughly same base as product ds, but double the equity.

      Google is probably similar.

That sounds right for ds product analytics vs core ds at fb. I’d like to confirm if that’s also true at google, and whether google offers a higher/lower comp for its product ds compared to fb

Nice, congratulations. What do they look for for IC4 vs IC5? I have a 6 years of experience and looking to make a move to Facebook so curious where I’ll come in. I’m staff level at my current role but obviously it doesn’t translate directly

There’s internal guidelines around expectations for 4 vs 5 but my manager told me these are purposely made abstract and in reality it can be very subjective. Regardlessly, 5 typically owns a much larger product area and is company expert, has large influence on product strategy and shows strong leadership skills. You don’t need to be good at all these to be a 5 though

I can also share what ds at fb is like if anyone is interested. FWIW my motivation of moving has more to do with commute (I live in sf where there aren’t many ds openings at fb)

Aren’t there Instagram openings in sf and ds ml roles at hq? Not worth starting from scratch in my mind if you are on a good trajectory from a ratings perspective

Yeah I’m considering sf openings but there aren’t many choices, so it’s worth exploring other companies as well.
