Data scientist is a data analyst is Silicon Valley, haha. I think in practice, a data scientist role is more heavily engineering or ML stats oriented, a bit farther from the business. An analyst is business outcome focused and less data product focused.

My company opened up data analyst roles because they skewed Junior and we're more easy to hire. We have the scientists doing the heavy lifting the analysts are acting as dash boarding monkeys.

Roughly, Data scientist = ML/stats + (algorithm level) coding + databases + viz + management consulting Data analyst = data viz + databases + (api/web app level) coding But with seniority it gets blurred.

Many of the response you see here have some good points. I would add that most data analysts simply analyze data provided to them from existing data sources, such as web analytics platforms or back-end databases of customer transactions or user behavioral. Data scientists actually go the extra step and use their skills in a more technical manner (in addition to analytical) and combine data from multiple sources, they are the ones writing the custom queries and do the stitching on the data and preparing it for them to analyze. Most data analysts serve the purpose of doing more routine tasks to analyze data and solve higher level issues for companies. Most data scientists concentrate on solving the "needle in a haystack" (deep dives) type analysis which can ultimately have a larger impact, but are more risky (since they may spend a lot of time finding nothing). This type of analysis is far different than your standard dashboards showing company metrics that data analysts do.
