Data science comp vs eng comp

Which companies pay data scientists on the same ladder as engineering?

Some examples of companies which don't: FB pays data scientists similar cash comp but severely reduced equity vs software engineers of same level, Google similarly pays generally less to quantitative analysts.

it’s because data is still a field in its infancy. data scientists can be anything from (good) product analysts who mainly use Excel and Tableau to phd SWEs who do ML to former econ professors who employ econometrics and like R etc

you see the same thing with data engineers where it encompasses all of: ex-DBAs who don’t have CS degrees and dealt w traditional non-tech BI and data warehousing and mainly use SQL; SWEs on data infra building near real-time distributed systems; DSes who have to data munge and put together data pipelines; applied ML people doing feature engineering etc

Product analysts are doing complex SQL more than anything else. Some are also in the weeds with Python/R and doing some predictive analytics. Tableau and excel might be used but only to share data.

Facebook is right, data roles are varied and you can't tell based on title, you need to ask the job function, it's like software eng in 80s or 90s. It seems industry is converging to use data scientist title for more analytics roles rather than ML roles.

I would say that it’s rare for even a “sql monkey DS” to consider excel as one of their main tools.

I think the more product analyst DS are using a lot of sql, but they separate themselves from just your regular business analyst by having some statistics background - I.e having a solid understanding of hypothesis testing and designing experiments and basic statistical analysis. They usually have some python/R skill but not a ton.

I think you might underestimate business analyst. Those basic stats and even SQL require not more than a month to understand and start using. I've seen many business (marketing) analysts do some product work, and vice versa. Excel, tableau, python etc is just tools to do analysis from the data pulled. To add more confusion, Facebook also has "growth analyst" which is the same as marketing analyst, who specializes in marketing campaigns etc

My point is different analyst's roles is similar to each other and shouldnt be confused with eng role.

Data and applied scientists at microsoft are paid more than eng. I have a few samples who are at the very high end of the band

They aren't paid more but they're in the same band

Don't know if any DS got SSAs though

The ones I know are ML phds who do ML research and software eng as part of the job. They're paid more than 2 levels higher than SDEs that I see in blind.

Ah that's a very different story from the standard DS people at MS. The main DS track is paid the same on base as eng, but generally gets less stock/signing bonus etc. The ML research type roles are their own world and career track

Do data scientists typically earn less than software engineers?

I feel like a data scientist is a software engineer that also knows statistics, data tools, etc? Why would they get paid less to know more, unless they really suck at the eng part?

data scientists at FB are more ‘empowered product data analysts’. they in fact used to be called product analysts before the title changed to be more compelling in the market
      Oct 21, 2018
    • The data scientists I've worked with know stats and data tools, and enough Python or R to do their jobs, but couldn't build a reliable application to save their lives.

DS at fb is not more technical than business analyst. ML Eng makes the same and have the same title as normal SWE

The DS title differs across companies. Better check with recruiter.
