Not sure what you mean by database engineering. If you mean designing/developing new databases that could be really lucrative but probably also really competitive. If you mean DBA work, it involves creating table schemas, views, and indexes, and optimizing performance in other ways. It’s looked down upon by a lot of SWEs. Data Engineering is ETL, integration, big data management (Hadoop, spark, etc). There is a lot of cool evolving work in this space but you could also get stuck doing informatica jobs all day.
