As a first gen Asian American I still have family back in Asia. How do you handle a death of an extended family member (cousin, grandparents, uncle, etc.)? Do you take time off to go to the funeral? How much time? Will your job understand? Flying out of country isn't cheap. Hasn't happened to me yet but eventually it will.
Most companies have a bereavement policy for immediate family - check with your HR
Spending $1000 and up, on top of taking 4 PTO days, is not trivial. Ask yourself if the relative is close enough that he/she would have done the same for your funeral. Depending on their economic situation, the survivors might appreciate you more if you stay and donate the ticket money to them.
Once you give money. They will come back for more money. Money ruins everything !! Don’t donate the money unless it is life threatening situation.
Everybody knows a relative or two with an entitled attitude. It goes without saying that you should avoid these people. However, if an uncle with small children die and the widow is almost destitute, I don't see donation as a bad idea. Do you think they don't resent you if their kids can't even go to school while you live a wealthy life in USA?

Why are Americans obsessed with SUV?
Have a conscience that lets you do that only for important / close relatives. Have an employer who doesn’t think twice about making the space that you require. Done.
