I was skipped past phone interview directly to on site. I believe this is because of my experience in Azure and expressed interest in GCP. I've read on blind that phone interviews are harder now than on-site, not sure if this is the case with Google as well. I recently failed Uber phone interview and don't want to leave a bad impression at Google. I may want to work there in the future just not right now. And I'm not motivated at all to study up. Just received an offer from AWS for 300k in a low COL city with a great team and manager that I'm thinking I'll accept. Current TC is 275k 11 yoe in Seattle and hate it here. Pretty sure Google won't offer better with COL adjustment in Bay area, and not really excited to move there. Should I go for the experience? I don't think I'll get an offer or one that I'll like. Or should I respectfully decline?
Amazon Location
Paid holiday, why not
Thing is I'm assuming they have high hopes in terms of performance and ability to obtain offer if they decided to skip me past phone interview. I don't want it to reflect too bad on future apps
The worst case is you'll just go through the phone interview
Same thing happened to me. Had a great offer already, but thought, what the hell might as well interview for the experience. Ended up bombing the interview, but I got a free lunch out of it
How do you think this will impact your future applications to that company?
Wait a year, go through interview again. I think your interview performance is reflected in the future thought if you bomb 3 times than that can impact future possibility
Your current level at MS? 275k at MS is great
If you plan to interview with Google at some point in the future it may be good to do it now to get a feel for their process so you're better prepared in the future. And you never know - maybe they will like you enough to offer something better than Amazon!
Do the Google interview. Kick ass.
$300k for AWS in a place like Austin with a great team and manager will likely be near impossible for Google to match, especially with COL. There is nothing wrong with simply being happy with that offer, accepting it, and reconsidering Google down the line. Send a nice note to recruiter and say thanks but I made a decision and don't want to waste anyone's time. Go do the interview if you want, but why waste the time and who knows what happens if you bomb it. The only sure/safe thing to do is skip it, if you plan to take AWS. IMO...
Thanks, this really helped
Google has its own office in Austin. AWS may have more interesting projects, though.
11 yoe.. all 11 years in msft? 275k is very high. What is your split and level?
I’m in the opposite situation. I did on-site with google and I think I did well. I have on-site at AWS coming up. I’ll go through with it and go with my gut if I get offers. Definitely will take advantage of the fact that I’m talking to both and will let both know about it in order to secure the best TC.

If you are going to accept Amazon then no need of giving Google. If you think you are in form to crack Google, give interview and get the offer. Even if you reject, in future it will definitely help to go back.
I've already confirmed on site date but haven't scheduled travel. I was leaning towards declining as well as the most respectful way to proceed
