Delaying Start Date for New Job

There are roles I am interested in and qualify for now, but I won’t be able to relocate until late spring/summer. I don’t want to pass up an opportunity at companies I want to work for, but not sure if I should hold off for a few months or apply now...If I were to receive any offers, what is a reasonable amount of time to delay a start date? Is two months+ too aggressive to request? I would be moving out of state, so I am not sure how much leeway companies give in those circumstances.

Depends on the needs of the team. However don't wait to start applying. If you find something you like then go for it. Start dates can be negotiated specially if you make your requests early in the interviewing process. People on visa sometimes have to push their start dates by 3+ months. So 2+ should be fine.

I dont think thats unreasonable for out of state relocation. I asked for about 6 weeks (so I could finish up a couple current projects) and I wasnt a relocation.

Awesome, thank you both. Appreciate it!

Forgot to ask, but when should this request be asked or mentioned? I am assuming after I actually get an offer (after I have made a positive impression)?

Typically recruiters ask when you can start. This sometimes comes up in the very first call you have with them.

I pushed mine by 6 months. On Visa which delayed 2 months. But 4 months was pushed by negotiation and telling them I was going on month long vacation which I would like to take.

Did you mention this at the beginning with the recruiter or later after you received an offer?

Nope. After I got the offer
