Has anyone ever had a colleague reach out for a referral, but you know they’d be a terrible match for the position? How did/would you handle this situation while minimizing conflict/damage to relationship?
"I had a chance to go through resume, and based on my knowledge, the team you specified prefers people with X skillsets, or min Y years of experience. I feel position A in team B would be a better fit for you. I am enclosing below the link to the job description. Let me know if it interests you and I will be happy to refer you. Happy to discuss if you have any questions."
Tell them they have a very low chance of getting into that position unless they are extremely good at <insert the competencies you know they lack>. And then offer to refer them to a different position that would be a better fit. Maybe even suggest another position which you’re willing to refer them to.
Hi X, I know that team and I know that they are looking for some very specific skills such as xyz, so I don't think you'll be their top choice. I'd love to work with you again, so let me know if you find other roles you're interested in at True car and I'll be happy to refer you.
