Did India do the right thing building a $400m statue?

Nov 2, 2018 114 Comments

Other countries are investing in future and we just made a gigantic investment in the past.

Oh and by the way, there are more statues on the way- https://www.timesnownews.com/india/article/statue-of-unity-will-no-more-be-the-world-tallest-statue-after-2021-chhatrapati-shivaji-maharaj-memorial-shiv-smarak-mumbai-maharashtra-narendra-modi/307575

That money could've been used to improve the shitty infrastructure. You don't need to spend that kind of money to honor the past.

@Maverick- Please present your argument outside of sobby statements like “You know how many farmers commit suidcide every year?”

India’s annual spending budget is $400B. The statue costs $400M i.e 0.1% of spending budget. Some of the remaining 99.9% of the amount is used to solve your sob stories in India.

The statue mobilizes people and attracts tourism. Don’t tell me that no one will go there because human kind has set precedence by spending thousands to visiting mindless statues all over the world.

@ebay I see, you are the “I am a BJP dumbo” kinda guy. Do some simple math about time it would take to recover the investment. Most of the monuments are close to a city, this shit of in the middle of nowhere.

Its a no brainer what the poll results will be, when it is hosted on Blind (a non Indian forum)

Come to India to see the reaction of the general public.

And if you really care and are unhappy with the current state of affairs, then rather than being a keyboard warrior ensure you have your tickets booked to come and vote.

Hope you don’t mind spending some dollars for the country!

Modi supporters would reach their orgasm watching the yuge statue.. List one of Modi's own achievement instead of just name changing.. Statue is a collosal waste of money. Yes money would dwarf in comparison to largesse payouts to Anil Ambani

  • One-time 400m is nothing in a national context. America spends $45 billion in Afghanistan every year and it isn't even at war.

It's not a bad idea as long as we don't build a dozen of them. It's also a morale and tourism thing.

Non Indian here, but I have visited India many times. Seems to me there is a lot of basic infrastructure that is crumbling, especially outside the little tech bubble areas. I think 400m in India would build a lot of sewers, fix a lot of roads, upgrade a lot of power lines.

These Modis testicule sacks will come up with the most stupidest of reasons to justify the ripoff that BJP is handing the Indian population. So now this will boost tourism- for heaven sakes who will want to see this ugly fascist figure. This is like erecting Hitlers statue in Germany to attract tourists.

to the above (New:hayran)... i see what you did there. You have no logical argument to make; so you came here, took out frustration of your personal failures on the people who do not agree with you. Call Sardar Patel status a fascist one (Wow!!). Ok. Your ignorance of history, your poor understanding of economy and democracy doesn't make sense a bit. Reply if you want to prove something now, I DONT CARE.

To Uber. well.. I dont have any calculations about how much will it benefit directly.. and do not want to copy paste the general response seen on web regarding the 400 million were spent on labor and resources (which in turn increases employment) or tourism based economy etc etc; but I do have certain points which I am sure a smart person like you will understand. In democracy, there are different segments of society, and different priorities of each segments.

A certain segment will want free food, cheaper patrol, less amount in GST etc etc while not paying taxes, others will want the same while paying taxes.

A certain segment will want more of government spending on defence to stop terrorism, another segment is satisfied with the words "hum iski kade shabdo me ninda karte he".

A certain segment will want tax payers money to be spent on basic necessities like sewers, hospitals, roads etc; while a certains segment is happy if a farmers loan is forgiven, but less money is spent on infra like irrigation and supply chain management (which, in longer run, help the farmers better).

Among all these segments, there is a certain tax payer segment, which want to remember India's history proudly and not by just reading one textbook chapter in 7th standard history book (while a certain family is eating up all the credit). We want to remember a persona without whom india as we know today, wouldnt have been possible.

When a government runs a country, it thinks about country's future. Its same as business, if you keep eating up whatever you earnt, you will never make progress, and future wont be better than a daily wager.

Indian government still spends a lot for people (even when the dont appreciate it); even in its current set of policies under Modi. If you dont believe check out the 2018 budget details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Union_budget_of_India
The amount spent for infra is probably 10K+ times more than a mere cost of a statue (which again was spent by state government).

My original comment was about the frustration an average, educated indian tax payer faces everyday; when he sees that his tax money is not being spent on many more necessary issues. And yes, being proud of your history and at the same time making something useful out of it, is a necessary one.

A country needs right ideals to go ahead. India till now had been psychologically neutered by imposition of Gandhi and Nehru's pacifism, appeasement and leftism.

For India to progress, it needs different ideals eg Bose, Patel who fought and accomplished big tasks in face of adversity. We won't go anywhere with the begging mentality of Gandhi, Nehru.
    Nov 2, 2018 7
    • Uber bcckgc
That India was psychologically neutered ... That's what Patel would disagree.

He did a great job... Under nehrus leadership .

If Patel had followed Nehru's leadership, we would have needed visa to visit Hyderabad and a few other places, in addition to few more border disputes like Kashmir.

      That's your leftist education speaking.

Indian values in its core value education, progress, enlightenment, questioning everything, making gods out of accomplished humans (Buddha, mahavir), creating women gods, respecting every aspect of nature (sun, water, trees, even snakes) etc.

In last 1000 years, these values got buried under islam, british, leftist influence. Indians lost confidence in themselves and their values. Finally it's being rediscovered and hope we'll unite and progress again.

Indian Islamic fundamentalists are the worst, they feel pride in bootlicking Arabs/Persians and insulting their own country. A multi generation stockholm syndrome going on with them, where they are in devotion of invaders who killed/converted their own ancestors.

Second largest statue in China is hardly attracting any visitors. Was the statue an engineering marvel? No.. Anybody with $400mil can build similar statues.. This is built to satisfy Modi's ego.. Also Sardar had banned RSS in the first place. Poor BJP, since they don't have any legacy of their own, they are trying to appropriate others legacies

The poll options are wrong. We should definitely honor the past, but not by building $400mn statues. We honor the leaders of the past by continuing & expanding their good work.

Guys- who were supportive of statue of liberty on this post. Are you still supportive given that UP and maharashtra are also following the league now? What are your thoughts about a ram statue. Isn’t it what the fuck moment for our country?

Many other memorials have been built before eg India gate, gateway of India, eiffel tower, statue of liberty, qutub minar, taj mahal
They were built because they meant something to the builders and people around. Today they are used as identifiers of the country, state and drive tourism.

It did create a few thousand jobs (temporarily for construction as well as permanent for maintenance). This would also drive tourism to a part of the country that otherwise lags behind popular destinations such as Rajasthan and Kerala.

Forget about whose statue it is, india was able to build the tallest statue in the world. Is it not a great achievement? I understand there is poverty and other issues, the country have to prove that it can build such huge statues or send rover to mars etc.. so that it might get more opportunities. People blame everything. How many of you talking about poor in this chat did anything to the poor other than talking about it?
    Nov 3, 2018 1

I don't really know anything about this statue. But given low cost of labor, seems it should be possible to build the world's biggest statue for much less than $400M.
