Did your parents hit / beat / slap / spank you as a child?

And if so, did you consider it child abuse?

Back in India it was normal to get a spank or two. But I guess things have changed now.

Was normal in USA too. But popular opinion has since changed.

I remember once my babysitter hit me for acting up and being disrespectful. I told my mom about it when she took me home. And she drove us right back to the babysitter. Asked her if she hit me. The lady confirmed she did. My mom asked her why she hit me. She explained. My mom then thanked her and hit me again to reinforce the lesson and to teach me about snitching. Thank god for my mom.

Define "beat" vs "hit" vs spank. Intention and Intensity matters a lot.

well for me, my dad slapped me across the face hard if I talked back to him. fortunately, never a 👊...

I broke my neighbors nose for abusing me. I got slaps before I could explain. Then my dad realized i wasn't entirely wrong. But i don't feel bad about it. I deserved it.

if you were beaten properly, then yeah it's abuse. but a few slaps once in a while is good. many parents here let their children do whatever the hell they want with no consequences and they grow to be horrible people.

I read "many" as "my"... 😝 😝 😝

No kid deserved to be hit, beaten or spanked. We just acted up, that's just the sugars in the growing brain, and the grown-ups only grew impatient, because their brains stopped growing, that is all. Kids that were not hit turned out better, IMO. Sensible Bullies make better Survivors!!

Wait until ur 5 year old throws a bathroon slipper on a guest's face purely out of fun. Patience goea out the door soon enough. Intention and Intensity of hitting matters a lot.

@CTS, It's your mistake to leave bathroom slippers accessible to your 5 year old. You deserve a similar Intentional and Intensive hitting, if not.

open hand across the buttocks. Thank god for dad.

I got slapped around a little bit but that's fine, I was probably asking for it

SAP ImposterX May 28, 2019

I got slapped by teachers twice, because I was big trouble. It took me three decades to actually not glorify the slapping but see it as what it is: Abuse. My main litmus test is now: 1) Would I shout at or hit my kids in front of the mother? 2) Would I do the same in front of my mother in law or my own parents? 3) How about in public? I fail as I lose patience and start shouting (which I’m regretting instantly and apologize and try to find a different way forward) sometimes and it is a continued struggle. However, I If the above 3 questions are deeply reflected upon and there’s just a sliver of a “no”, then we’re just looking at abuse of power. After all, I’ not resort to shouting or slapping with adolescents or adults, right?

yea I wasn't raised a snowflake.

Why is it okay/legal to hit a child who cannot defend themselves but not a grown adult? It’s wrong no matter what to use violence as a form of control

You don’t know what you don’t know. Blind spots because we need to maintain a high opinion of ourselves
