What are the expectations interviewing a director on eng for their coding skills at your company? Are they expected to know leetcode medium? Is it all systems design?
Are you interviewing for a real director of engg role or an inflated one (eg. OCI)
I am currently a senior manager so would likely be interviewing for real director of engineering roles for my next position. Just wanted to get a feel for what to study before looking around more actively.
Did you get an offer?

Unless if you're going to a tiny company which inflates titles, Directors, generally aren't responsible for any of the coding at an organization. The job is more focused on long-term strategic planning, managing budgets, goal-setting, managing managers (and/or high ranking individual contributors), and coming up with roadmaps which help to move the company forward. The role may have some level of financial accountability, within one or many product domains within an organization. As an engineering director, you'll likely be giving presentations to other non-technical business partners in order to obtain their "buy-in" for whatever initiative(s) that you're trying to pursue. A good engineering director may have skip-level 1:1's with engineering IC's who are in their chain of command. Good engineering directors are technical enough to be able to whiteboard, but not low-level enough to get into the college level problems that you need to solve during a SDE interview. The job consists of many meetings and much negotiation across an enterprise (more meetings if you are in a highly matrixed organization, like many on the Fortune 500 list). In most organizations, an engineering director is seen as a leader in the space; and this is not measured on technical chops alone.
Thanks, great response and description of the position. Given that — from the technical side I am assuming the interviews focus on systems design.
Absolutely. Yeah, traditionally at the Director level, most of the interview(s) will be systems focused.
