If you had to build a team of 4 from the following candidates, which would you choose? ## James 28 years old 7 years of experience White Male ## Melissa 61 years old 20 years of experience White Female ## Leo 22 years old 1 year of experience Hispanic Male ## Carl 27 years old 2 years of experience Black Male ## Billy-joe 36 years old 17 years of experience White Male ## Sandra 32 years old 5 years of experience Black Female ## Larry 24 years old 5 years of experience White Male ## Li 58 years old 18 years of experience Asian Female
James billy sandra larry
Years of experience doing what? Writing posts on Blind?
Race should not matter as long as you can pass leetcode
If the goal is truely diversity, record how many people we currently hire and break down their demographics and select accordingly. So Leo, Sandra, Carl and Melissa. But..... life is not so clean is it? People in HR want to keep their jobs, and not take "risks on people who are not experienced enough". When you are comparing someone with 2 yrs exp versus 17-20 yrs the choice seems obvious. Here's the rub though.....all of these candidates started somewhere. If the goal is diversity choose the ones above, because there are probably already an inproportionate amount of white males already in the company. ( adjust accordingly) Some people get offended and make the age old argument: "why do you choose Carl over James, is that not racism?" James is more qualified by several years, but around the same age? But my answer to you and to other people who have the luxury of posting such comfortable thought experiments is simple: Who do you see actually get these jobs and stay in them long enough to gain years of experience? Who sits beside you in the office? Or when you take the team photos, what team members have to be dispersed throughout the crowd or be displayed front and center to show your company's "diversity"? Also let's include a few more factors to this experiment such as: Economic background Credit score College/university These are often used to muddy the waters on the diversity hiring problem. There is an explicit bias. If there wasn't, then startups would represent the true makeup of america. Question: Would you feel comfortable living in a city or town where everyone was the same race and there was no one of "your kind" present (almost artificially so)? Probably not. Then have you considered that it's fucking discouraging to potential applicants to see no one who is old, non-white, or non-male on the team like themselves? They may even have the technical chops, but they don't feel they will be given a fair shake. Diversity matters. Not everyone wants to be the first to change things, like rosa parks or a social martyr. Let's not lose out on the genius and potential contributors to our society's future that we were too blind to see.
Wouldn't it be easier to just say "never hire white or asian males because that's the appropriate virtue signaling in tech"? Your post is just a big justification for racism. It's pretty shocking that you would think it's appropriate to hire based on sexual organs or skin color.
@Rtx984 this whole thread is about diversity. There's an obvious lack of women and people of color in these fields. If people would actually get some diversity in these companies it would be less of a problem. But it seems that "variety of opinions and culutural backgrounds" mean very little to you. I guess the status quo works best for those who benefit.
Years of experience is not a good metric for performance
This is retarded.
If that's all I could see on all of their resumes and conclude from their interviews I'd throw them all out and complain about whoever approved those resumes to begin with.
Melissa, Billy Joe, Larry, Li Melissa broke into the field around 40, so she brought life and probably business experience with her to her new career. Larry started at 19, so he's probably an enthusiast and still fresh with new ideas. Billy Joe is just Larry in the future, so hopefully more knowledgeable and a little cynical, less naive. Li is similar to Melissa. They are both mature, older and experienced. They can bond over their similarities and maturity, while providing mentorship to the younger team members.
These people would get priority- those without annoying voices, some startup or entrepreneurship experience, had lived in more than one country, whoever answered my questions with some analytical thinking, could demonstrate in the conversation that they were aware this was the year 2017, I could imagine having to sit in a cubicle beside them for 365 days without wanting to go postal... straight to top of list ... couldn't careless of their education or race... can I stand your presence for more than 8 hours that's the test
Why are race and gender listed? These aren't factors you would use in making hiring decisions.
Lol not at Microsoft
