Divided we fall

Recently, I took two polls on Blind. The first asked which way people thought most other people leaned politically, and the other asked people to self identify their own political leanings.

🎉 The results:

The first poll showed people assume others are an even split between left and right with some on the fringes of far left/right.

The second poll showed a majority middle with a few people left and right. Very few people identify as far left/right.

🤔 What we learned:

People think we’re more divided than we are. In reality, most people fall into the same part of the political spectrum.

🤷‍♂️ Questions:

Many of the comments suggest people who voted for Trump are “far right”. Why would you consider Trump far right?

Many posts on Blind refer to those who disagree with the right as “Liberals”. By definition, liberals are far left, and very few people fall there. Why do we categorize people this way?

If most of us fall in the middle, can we have better, more respectful conversations about issues important to us?

Such a BS. You don't become a moderate or a rational thinker just because you consider yourself so.

Assuming everyone is evil by default seems like a very biased view of the world.

+1 on RhpJ71 point. Most people think of themselves as reasonable people. So it is expected that if you ask in a poll if they are far right, far left or middle then majority will chose middle.

+1 asking "why is Trump far right" is either troll or naive - the bastard supports religion-based travel bans and separates immigrant children from parents to deter migrants - in a country build by immigrants for immigrants - when there is a violent kkk demonstration says "there were fine people on both sides" - as I said, troll or extremely naive

@Glu: your response is pretty much summarizes my experience talking to Trump supporters. I justified my point and you are claiming something totally different: that I assume everyone is evil. Where did I do that? In fact, we are a much better organized society because the good people have been winning over the evil people in the longer run.

Shocking to see this line of reasoning from a manager at amazon. You won’t go very far there with that rational way of thinking! 😜

Liberalism isn’t “left” let alone “far left” - social liberalism is sometimes called center-left. So I don’t understand your point there.

People think Trump is right wing or even “far right wing” because his positions are more aligned with the right and he even flirts with the far-right by circulating memes created by fascists, using some far-right talking points, and he downplays far-right politics and violence.

Blind is generally pretty "moderate" when it comes to American politics BUT discourse here is also dominated by a small group of right wing trolls and propagandists. It seems like there's only two leftists on here: me and EllisDee25.

Is it possible that poles aren’t left and right, but informed and ignorant? People’s values and morals seem to have little to do with cheering or booing The President.
