I’ve been job searching for the whole year. I’ve gotten something along the lines of 30-40 phone interviews which (sometimes after more interviews, assignments, etc.) led to roughly 7 or so onsites and 1 offer (which I had to turn down). I’m getting really frustrating not landing any real offers and am wondering if I’m bad at interviewing itself or if I have an actual skills gap. Any thoughts or advice? I’m considering hiring a career coach but have heard they could be a waste of money. On the one hand I feel like I’m getting a ton of interest, on the other I’m struggling to reach the finish line. Wonder what replies you will get...
Could be a boastful resume. Turned down many candidates whose major flaw was claiming expertise in stuff and then falling short.
Nah that's too harsh. They just need to improve a bit in that department. Then they can be productive member of society again.
Who has the time to maintain a black list, geez
Nervous? Do you talk over people? Do you give overlong answers? Stress triggers a personality change in most people. I go from harmonious to controlling, so you might imagine how that plays out in interviewing. Just try to relax. Tell yourself you already have the job and your confidence will have a calming effect on you and your interviewers.
Great advice thanks! I may tend to ramble and be a bit too high level in my answers
I'm in the same boat. I've been looking since June and have been rejected after the final round 6x now. Got a career coach who has helped me with interview prep, amongst other things. I think it's useful, just be sure to shop around and talk to a few coaches before committing to anything - some are much better and more appropriate for certain situations than others.
Happy to chat more about this too, feel free to dm me
How did you search/find a career coach? LinkedIn pro finder or elsewhere?
Don’t blame yourself. Rejection could stem from totally unrelated reasons. May be they already have someone in mind and doing interviews to avoid legal issues, may be they just don’t get ‘Aha’ feeling from you, may be they have to maintain certain ratios between genders/minorities and so on. Keep applying and something will work out...
Thanks a bunch! Early on I told myself “it’s a numbers game” but after so many interviews I’m starting to question that assumption
We need more information to answer the question, but getting that many interviews shows that the problem is not your resume. Do you embellish any of your knowledge there? Are you sensing difficulty in your interviews answering questions?
Yeah it could be, I did a resume revamp and SEO of my linkedin and got great results. I would imagine this would get sniffed out early though. I wouldn’t go as far as saying anything is embellished. In regards to the interview questions I never feel like they’re super difficult, though I may tend to ramble or give oversimplified answers.
It may just be an issue with communication then. You need to make sure you explain your thought processes and not just give the answer.
OP, what's your skillset? Location? Education? And what are you aiming for in the new job ?
Background in Mechanical Engineering, work at a software co. Went to 2 top 5 engineering schools (BS/MS). Lots of exp working directly with customers as cross functionally. In Bay Area. Lack of experience working with software engineers (known gap, also why I want a new job where I can do that sort of thing). Looking to gain new skills and work on more interesting projects in new job.
You have a good skillset/education mix. What's your current focus ? Your ideal role isn't quite clear. " I want to work with software engineers" - not quite a goal I'd say. What type of a job do you want ? Engineering ? If so, what type? Strategy ? Sales ? Product? Etc.
What was the offer you didn’t accept?
Small startup that offered me 150k, then came back later and offered me 130k. I was already on the fence about the culture and internal communication problems so I rejected the offer.
Lowering the offer is a huge red flag. You made the smart choice
Good call. If it doesn’t pass the smell test you’re better off to keep looking
Are you doing well in the interviews- able to answer most of the questions well, leaving an overall positive impression? If not learn / improve skills / try again?
I felt like I am but the numbers don’t agree. I’d say I usually have 1 “okay” interview and the rest seem great to me
Maybe try mock interviewing with a colleague- ask for honest feedback.
