I can understand that because AWS is all about a cloud product for customer IT ops it makes sense developers would be on call. Do other teams at Amazon like retail or video also require SWEs to be oncall too? Or is it just an AWS thing?
Many but not all retail teams have on-call. The website is backed by many, many services, and those teams typically support their own operations. Services that are purely internal often have on-call as well. In short, it depends heavily on the team. Ask about on-call when you interview!
My team in aws doesn’t have oncall till q3 2020
Most teams at Amazon have oncall if they have software that is actively being used and needs to be maintained.
It’s the same process for CDO also. But certain teams have Dev ops engineers and support engineers
