I am an SDE 1 at Amazon. My manager has informed me that I may be put under pip if I do not perform accordingly. I want to be ready for the worst case. If I am put under pip and ultimately terminated, which is the most common result, will other companies, I am interviewing with, do a background check with Amazon regarding reasons of exit?
If you get PIPed, just leave before you’re terminated so they can’t say they terminated you. Start applying to other companies now. Chances are, if you’re on the verge of a PIP, you’re more than likely to be PIPed, unfortunately. Your manager is most likely being nice by giving you a warning shot or head start.
Most of the time a PIP is cya for the manager and HR. They want to let you go but need to show they gave you a chance. I've personally never seen someone recover from a PIP
I’ve seen employees recover from pips. Usually because they get transferred to another manager who actually cares or has the time to get the employee on the right track. But yes, that’s the exception to the rule.
almost all tech companies only release role and start/end dates, not even level and definitely not whether you were PIPed or terminated
What's the most common reason to get PIP? I don't know anyone who got one, so, I am curious.
Underperformance claims. Sometimes, such claims are rooted in politics.
If you are terminated after the pip you termination letter will say involuntary termination and otherwise. Companies when the run background check , they will pretty much know what happened. But they usually don’t care if you are an IC . Every one knows amazon is notorious when it comes to piping employees out. It’s more like , I will fire 10 good employees at the cost of getting rid of one incompetent one.
Previous company can only acknowledge that you did work there, and for how long. They will not know if you were fired vs left on your own unless you committed a crime which got you terminated.
How long has it been since you started working op? And are you on visa?
start looking for a job now, and make the switch whenever you can. pip is usually an early warning.
No, they won't ask and Amazon wouldn't tell them if they did.

Google announces more layoffs, plans to relocate jobs overseas
Nobody cares 🙂
If you're good enough to clear their interviews they want you. A bunch of good people aren't successful at Amazon/Google wherever for multiple reasons- but that doesn't mean they won't be successful elsewhere
Thank you. Helps a lot.
