I definitely know if you are hardworking and you bring a niche value to table, you will be respected, but if you compare two average employees, the one who is good looking & smart will have it easier. Do you see these examples in your team? Want to get a general sense here. I have seen that there is an unconscious bias in favor of good looking people in my team. I remember one of CVPs at Microsoft calling out that he was tested positive for unconscious bias for good looking people in some inclusion training/test.
Even the geekiest techies cannot escape fundamental human bias.
You’re asking about two completely different variables. You should really keep all else equal and just look at one variable.
I think engineers and immigrants may have different criteria for good looking compared to normal Americans. So not so good looking ones in general public’s eye may actually get the advantage in tech companies.
So...are you saying that engineers don't see sexy like normal people?
Not at Amazon.
Goldman hires hot girls even when they fail written/coding rounds. So the answer is Yes, unless you are super smart who can write Knuth level stuff.
I feel like they are just hiring based on gender then... In the actual workplace, they probably get judged, no?
Obviously people like attractive people more, what kind of answer were you looking for?
I think it’s a bias experienced in all aspects of society. Looks alone won’t open all doors, but it makes the journey easier

Good looking people have it easy in LIFE. Not just at work. It’s a given really
True, there's still a long way to go for us to get over these biases in general
As an attractive male, I don’t think I get taken as seriously as my peers. Half the time, people cut me off and don’t listen to what I say. I’ve seen it with attractive women too. People assume attractive people are less competent.

I’m Sooo Happy about Biden signing TikTok ban bill today!!
Definitely not at AMD, I almost feel like attractive females are not taken seriously.
Being an attractive woman and an attractive male are different though, no? There's also a difference in your attractive "type". Like if you're a "pretty" boy vs a "handsome" boy. Personally I feel like if you are an attractive female it is shitty. Then if you are a man, it doesn't matter as long as you have charisma which sometimes comes with being good looking.
So it does matter — just not in the way you’d think.
