Was wondering if h-1 b guys pay slightly higher tax compared to permanent residents or citizens ? My online research shows there’s no difference. All pay same tax but the social security tax benefits are not enjoyed by visa holders . Just wanted to confirm

H1B here, same taxes, but no SS benefits. So, effectively higher taxes

It’s a work visa, not a disability and retirement visa.

Why would you expect to receive benefits without qualifying for them? Work 40 quarters to qualify like anyone else.

That is the point, there is no realistic way of getting SS benefits if you lose your job on H1B, even if you worked for 40 quarters.

Then work visa holders shouldn’t have to contribute towards SS either. It’s not an entitlement, it’s something you have contributed towards your entire working life.

Sure there is. Move to a different work classification, as many do, to receive benefits.

There is no material constituency of citizens that would support giving work visa holders opt-outs that citizens don’t enjoy and making H1B workers cheaper for a company than citizens.

There is no “different work classification”. The vast majority of Indian H1bs will contribute to SS their entire work life, get kicked out one day, and kiss goodbye to their contributions. Other nationalities can move forward in their green card process, or say move to TN (Canadian nationals) as you have suggested

Not a higher tax per law but higher tax in reality due to not using some of the deductions in many cases (eg mortgage deduction as many of h1bs wait to get GC first to buy home).

No they don’t. Exact same thing. IRS doesn’t ask about status while filing. You are considered a US person regardless

A lot of shit on this topic. I bought on L1B, been paying SS and Medicare and claimed mortgage interest deduction.

My point is, less people decide to buy while on H1B due to uncertainty, leading them to not use the deduction despite the legal possibility to do that.

I’m not a homeowner, but is there any tax benefit of owning a home over standard deduction? I know this is altogether a different topic, but just putting it out there.
