im an engineer planning to leave fb soon and debating if i need to tell hr/manager where im going? headed to google on a completely unrelated team. what are the pros and cons of each assuming im giving the normal 2 weeks notice. will i be escorted out if its a direct competitor?
Google to Facebook and Facebook to Google are very common moves. Since it is an unrelated team, you should not have anything to worry about.
Just make sure you are okay with not giving 2 weeks noticed period say vesting and such. If you are at higher roles and you are going to work for a competitor they may walk you out.
From what I understand about being walked out is that you get still paid for the remaining time without actually showing up to work. Companies, especially big companies donât go through the trouble of âfiringâ you because you handed in notice. They are ok you pick you last day with respect of vesting schedules etc. If they walk you out it just means they tell you that you donât need to show up for your last two weeks but you are still âemployedâ for those two weeks.
From what I hear, when an employee gives an official two week notice, they may be walked out the same day but the employee does/should receive the two week pay. Pay might not even be a source of concern here, yet. Also, as someone else stated, in US your employment is at will. Either you or the employer can end it with or without reason. This is, of course, the legality of it. Itâs always nice to be nice to your manager/team and serve the two weeks. Good luck at Google!
TC,YOE?
Nope (do you have to ..) Yup (escorted out it name a competitor)..
No.
If you donât, you will certainly be escorted out. They will have to treat it like youâre moving to a direct competitor when they donât know the company.
You donât have to tell them. Facebook does not have a walk out policy. Even if you tell them itâs to a direct competitor for your product. Theyâll ask, but they donât care if you tell them or not. Theyâre pretty humane in the exit process.
Noob question here, When they walk someone out, is their official end date the same day or after 2 weeks? (They just don't have to come to work for the 2 weeks?)

Yes
You donât have to tell them anything. But know that they can still escort you out regardless of what you tell them.
