I keep seeing these posts on LinkedIn about ppl at linkedin celebrating Inday, Diwali, women at work, Halloween. I see pics of lots of ppl socializing more than actually working. When do you guys actually work and how does the company benefit because of you? Is it PR to attract talent? What is the intention? All fun and no work = sinking 🚢 @linkedin
I usually sit back and work while everyone parties around me. I’m not alone in this.
Think of it this way, there are lots of things you could do, but if you did all the things you're hearing about, you'd be a low performer. I usually try to cap it at an average of 2-4 hours a week. The other thing is we have the slogan of "relationships matter" (which is very true if you want to get shit done) and these events are great for building and maintaining good relationships.
Once a month we have InDay where people aren’t obligated to work and those are most likely the pictures you see. One of the perks we have. I personally work about 55-60 hrs a week. Sometimes I join the fun but most of the time I’m working.
I feel like in days and celebrations are mostly for businessy people like sales and recruiting and less so for engineers
We really don’t. Am a new start, Snr SRE. Currently broadcast meetings take about 20% of the week. (These are things like all-hands, department weeklys, etc). Relevant email (emails are broadcast wide, and you have to read to see if it’s relevant) about 10%. Events such as Diwali etc, which are effectively work time (They happen during work hours) is another 10%. That’s 40% effectively not really working.
How is this different than any other company? It’s up to you to act like an adult and prioritize. As an SRE there’s real shit you should be doing right now.
Exactly I have same question. One year before they rejected me coz I couldn’t solve one coding question n optimized way. Rest of the interviews I did well. I think I don’t have enough coding skills needed to celebrate these festivals
I just quietly work with my headphone on all the time. I was plugged in all the time...
I’d answer but have to run to our weekly brewers social event
