Joined FB about 3.5 years ago. Have been in 3 different teams so far. All teams have horrible wlb, people work really long hours, work chat discussion at 9 pm isn’t that uncommon. There’s pressure to move fast and ship more. Lot of peer pressure as everyone ships a lot. Which makes people write crappy code which breaks often. When there ‘s a breakage manager gets mad, so basically he expects to ship a lot while maintaining quality. It seems getting married to your job is the norm. That has been my experience in all the 3 teams. My friends in other teams complain about the same thing too. One of my teammates from my current team moved to a different team hoping that things would be better there, he’s coming back to my team this month as things are even crappier in his new team. So I have given up on the hope of finding a decent team in here, thinking to start preparing and move out. So my question to guys: is this messy culture present only in FB or happens everywhere?
I'll mention that in NYC most people I know work 40-hour weeks, including my team. I'm curious if the awful WLB is more of an MPK thing?
Is work chat discussion at 9pm a bad thing? My team does it, but casually
Total opposite here.
I have been 3 different orgs, can’t disclose that to protect my anonymity
I feel I’m doing much better with the low pay at MS. Good work and decent wlb.
Join Bloomberg in NYC. Work 40 hours per week and earn a higher hourly rate than you're getting at FB. Plus it's all cash, so you can invest the cash however you want and not be forced to lose TC when your company's stock tanks. Added bonus: there's no forced attrition and it's extremely uncommon for SWE's to be put on PIP. Some departments have fully automated CI/CD pipelines, and some don't. TC: $200k with 1.5 YOE
This guy lies everywhere. You mentioned your YOE differently in another post and said you're over 40. Have you been working in a bakery for the past 20 years and recently switch to dev? Also your dept is BLAW which is a subsidiary and not even the real Bloomberg. Whatever you say even if true isn't even remotely relevant to most people, let alone lying and spreading fake news. Don't try to cover up the truth: it's extremely uncommon for devs to be put on PIP because if that's a thing half of the devs would probably be put on PIP. Bloomberg will lowball you to death and make you rot on legacy fortran and bombard you with 2am pager oncall duty and drown you with its insane politics. I gtfo the moment I got my gc and never looked back.
OMG. Why do people lie in an anonymous forum?
WLB is bad on my team as well. 10 hours a day plus some work at home and on the weekend is the norm. Pressure to ship is real
Wlb is horrible at many teams in Amazon too. Last 3 teams I’ve been in are crap. Clueless management.
Think about the fact that you’re burning out to support a company that exists for the sole purpose of pushing ads, manipulating user behavior, and selling user information. Leave and do something that benefits society.
Unfortunately the only comparable competitor for pay and benefits is google - and they do the same. And why do idiots still think they sell data?
Providing access to user data and selling user data are a strictly semantic difference. The end result is the same. Users are disregarded.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
I have a feeling that the same person is posting this shit everyday with a different userid cos I'm seeing the same FB / wlb stuff everyday
Stop trying to validate your fake conspiracy theory, it's a real problem at FB among other ones
If you cant hack it, it’s time to leave. My friends at fb in infra and product do not work more than 40 - it is just you. Stop making it sound like it is widespread
