Do companies like Two Sigma and Tower Research and Hudson River Trading actually need distributed systems? Do they even have enough data to need this kind of stuff?

around 3000 stocks or so, each with ticks several times per second from multiple data sources all day long, while latency is measured in microseconds.

That's roughly a billion data points of raw data per day. Perhaps add an order of magnitude or two.

We are talking about companies that care about the speed of light as data travels through downtown Manhattan, and occasionally across the Hudson.

Yes they do! Datasets especially around option tick data can be huge! Like 2TB for a day to give you an idea.

Of course. Colocated ultra low latency networks need lots of distributed systems work
