I was recently promoted but am not sure what the advice is around negotiating for a raise. Any advice?
Is it customary to negotiate a raise when getting promoted? Does the manager say “surprise based on your hard work, I’m promoting you to a senior! And you get more money” and you go “uhh I was expecting even more”? Not sure how negotiating a raise after promotion would work
You don’t say “I was expecting more”. You say “thank you, but based on all of my accomplishments (list them out) I was hoping we could land (insert salary here).” If it’s a hard no then whatever, you tried. But if they come back with an extra bump in salary, all the better. You literally have nothing to lose.
I get what you’re saying, but that makes you sound like an ungrateful prick. The boss is usually giving you the promotion outside of your expectation. so this makes you sound like you’re expecting a promotion the entire time and not getting it, and also expecting a specific level of compensation from the promotion. All in all, it just makes you sound like a person who just simply is not satisfied with the current situation, which could cause issues.

Never knew this was a thing one could do 🤔
It seems strange to negotiate a promotion to me when it’s a done deal. The time to prime the pump is before you are promoted but it might be in the works
You aren’t negotiating the promotion, you are negotiating your salary. If they think you are worth it to promote, then you have room to negotiate salary.
Negotiating a promotion when it’s already been decided and you’re told? 😂 good luck!
You sound like you’ve never tried this before. Too bad, your TC could have been so much higher.
Everyone here seems to have a hard time realizing that you can actually negotiate this. If you don’t, you are missing out on a valuable opportunity to increase your TC. There seems to be a disconnect here for some people so I’ll try to explain it with a comparison. If I asked you if you would negotiate a job offer, you would very likely say yes. Why? Because you fought for that job offer. On the other hand, You would probably say no to negotiating a promotion because you think it was handed to you as a gift. It wasn’t though. You fought for it just as hard by working hard and being successful. Your boss isn’t going to promote you for nothing. You earned it. So just like you earned that job offer, you also earned this “unexpected promotion”. Don’t waste it by not negotiating.
Some companies have memo to managers that merit and promo is FYI and not negotiable.
There’s probably a better time to negotiate the raise outside of being delivered the news that you’re being promoted. But yes, getting a promotion means they need you, and usually indicates you’re in a position to negotiate for more. Why not negotiate this during prior 1:1s before getting promoted? I can see how this can make them more hesitant to promote you.
Always negotiate a raise. Always. Companies will low ball you every chance they get. The only person advocating for you is yourself.
