I went through an interview at Google last week, and most of my interviewers didn't code/learn in their free time. I was shocked as coding / learning has been my passion since I was in middle school. There are many mornings where I wake up excited to finish working on a problem from the day before. And there is always something new to learn / build whether its work related or not. Does anybody else enjoy coding in your free time? Why or why not?
I imagine people in FANG/start-ups work such long hours or work so hard that they’re too mentally exhausted to code for fun once they get home. I personally try to code a little bit in my spare time but that’s only because I don’t code as much as I want at work.
Its very strange to me, the last two companies I've been at have been very similar. If I'm really engaged in a work project, I might spend 12+ hours a day on it. If not, at the end of the day im still excited to work on personal projects. I burn out ocassionally, but a month or so break, and I'm ready to go again.
You sound young. Give it more time, your perspective will change.
Coding is meditation - leet code is not !!
I enjoy lc as well 😔. I didn't goto school for CS, so it was a large weak spot for me. Leetcode along with G4G and other books helped me convert that into a strength. Contests are always fun aswell.
Its like solving math problems to me
You know, people have lives...there is family, there are friends, there is gym, there are outdoor stuffs or events, etc How much time do you think is left for “coding for fun”? Pretty much nill. Sure, if you don’t have family or friends and you are ok being a 250 pounds couch potato, then you have that time.
Interesting perspective. I am asking people why they do or don't. I am not here to speculate 😁
Eh that’s why most people you met don’t code outside of their work. They spend the little time they have enjoying other aspects of life. That is also why the 20% free time initiative at Google was so successful. People can effectively spend some of the work hours doing leisure coding.
I code in the evenings and weekends, mostly trying out new tech or libraries, etc.
Any favourite new techs/libraries?
been looking into opencv lately. lightning network is also pretty cool.
I code every day on my commute, so like two hours. Sometimes when I get home as well - maybe 15-20 hours a week? But it's all strictly on things very different from my day to day. Game development mostly. The problems are different and fun.
So you're saying you're shocked that other people don't have the same passion or drive for something that you do??? You're shocked that there are people different from you and have different interests from you??? Either trolling or has been living in a huge bubble and thinks everyone is like them lulz
I am not shocked that there is always one person 😁. Sometimes I miss the days before internet communities went main stream and anonymous communities were respectful because... well just cause 😁
That never happened
Welcome to the real world
Hmm, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
