Do you have to care about the product?

I have worked in a few companies now and I have always cared about the product/mission pretty passionately. I can't imagine working for a company with a very generic product, like some generic fintech or some texting app. Those of you who don't care much about your company's product, does it make waking up and doing your job harder? Or is good TC enough for you to ignore that

I see everyone else caring about out product. I don't think I could care about any company's product

You got it figured out. Go forth and be awesome. Don't ask to wallow with the filth.

Not caring about the product you're building is a pretty shitty way to spend your days... But it's great for WLB.

It hurts to deal with people that do not care about the product - i had a manager that had this mentality

Itā€™s like Stockholm syndrome. You start loving your captors after being in captivity too long

So I just have to wait it out?

Youā€™ll start loving her but it takes time

Yes, you feel it. I compensate by finding side projects that benefit the team and I see as more fun. Makes for terrible for wlb compared to what it could be because I end up taking on too much work. But terrible wlb is relative, it's still Oracle. My 50 here would be 60 at Facebook or Amazon.

Main problem is that you end up with a bunch of coworkers who are also happy working on uninspiring stuff. Mind numbing.

Zymergen aGVa04 OP Dec 6, 2019

Good point, did not consider that these jobs will attract the kinds of people OK with that

Google souledMonk Dec 7, 2019

Only if you're working for an uninspiring product. Is your probability of respecting the product correlated with others' probability of it? If so, yes, the fact that you don't like your product raises the possibility that neither do your coworkers. Also, did you never consider the impact YOU might be having on your coworkers? Or is mass apathy an emergent phenomenon?

Thatā€™s awesome that you realized that. I think nowadays we have to care about the product weā€™re building because it isnā€™t simply a job anymore - for a lot of people what they do is their identity.
