Insane salaries - Check 10 minute commute - Check Infinite Growth opportunities in Tech - Check Great weather all year round - Check Hot pot of different cultures - Check What's not to love?
Lol I literally sit at the shoreline exit traffic for 10 minutes. Salaries yes, one of the few good things here. But then again, you are still a wage slave trying to pay off that 2.5 million $ house you bought for your 10 min commute.
It's a great area for career growth! And the region is evolving very rapidly. Will be a completely different place in the next 5-10 years.
If they built a ton of housing near public transit hubs, the bay area would be a much better place to live. It would help with affordability of housing, reduce the need for commuting by car, and allow people outside of tech to live here. However, it seems like most voters are homeowners and consistently vote in politicians that will block all housing developments. In it's current state, I think it is a low quality place to live. There are a lot of nice things, ex: The weather and nature nearby is nice, there are a lot of great restaurants, there are good career opportunities. However, in my opinion, the good points don't shine past the extreme lack of housing causing affordability and traffic issues that cascade into so many different aspects of life.
Hopefully with the expansion on Bart and loosening building restrictions more housing around transit will come. And Google will completely transform downtown SJ within the next 5 years.
Yeah, and maybe electrification of the Caltrain too. It's not an insurmountable problem, it just takes a lot of political influence and a change of attitude from the public (ex: to turn out in support of housing developments to counteract the NIMBYs who show up).
I moved to Seattle after living in the bay area for 3.5 years. It's been 6 months in Seattle, and boy, can't tell you how badly I miss the bay area! ☹️
Very interesting, and what do you miss the most?
Gonna guess it's the sun
If you're over 30ish and have a family with a good job, this place is amazing. If you're under 30 and are looking for adventure, this place is crap.
But even for someone with a family, aren't most of the good school districts restricted to extremely expensive neighborhoods? Wouldn't that force people to take out huge mortgages or pay for private schools that offset the benefit of high salaries?
Dunno. I'm from Midwest. The concept of 'good school district' isn't as important there so it's a pretty foreign concept to me.
Live here and I'm neutral towards it. I lived in Philly, Atlanta, Boston, and Dallas before this. Apart from Dallas, I loved all the other cities/regions more than Bay Area.
The greatest advantage that outweighs everything is pay and weather. The traffic can be easily overcome by living extremely close to work and paying an extra $1k to rent given the high pay. Owning a home is tough no matter the income here but renting is actually a great option at a fraction of the cost of owning a similar unit

I love it. But that doesn’t mean that everywhere else is bad to live. Also, it probably isn’t for everyone’s taste. We all have different tastes in things.
I’m planning to move there and very excited about it, but I keep hearing so many negative things that I get a bit scared 😊 But I really do think I’m going to love it there ...
If you don’t love it you can always move somewhere else later
