Democrats: Support Tax on Unrealized Gains?
New grad needs guidance on this topic. Appreciate any other suggestions on retirement and investments. Thanks Clarification: By max, I mean the maximum the government will allow (i.e. $18,500 for 401k and $5,500 for Roth IRA)
My retirement plan is all TSLA(Q). I don’t touch 401ks or IRAs
It depends on how old you are and whether you need cash. Probably saving to buy a house could be a good investment long term. Once you have the downpayment then maxing out 401K is a no brainer
Most on here probably can’t contribute tax deferred to an IRA due to maximum income limits.
Backdoor Roth IRA should do the trick for a tax free retirement
Any good links on this? Want to learn more.
Please clarify if by max amount you mean company match, or government limits.
Updated the poll to clarify
Is 401k necessary if you are not a US citizen?
It's just optional. Unless there is compelling reason one should at least contribute to get company match.
I’d recommend doing the 401k to get the company match and then max out Roth before 401k. There are benefits to Roth once you want to use the funds later in retirement and you may be prevented from contributing to it if you are highly compensated. So I say use it while you can.
Can you use Roth if you make more than $150K?
Yes. Make after tax Roth contributions ($5500 limit) then convert to a Roth IRA. Can do the same with After Tax 401(k) contributions.
401k is great to take down payment, 50k each of us, did it 3 times, worth every penny
+ Roth conversion & max out HSA.
I always try to contribute the maximum to my 401k. This year it means 18.5k pre-tax, 9.25k from Google's match plus $27.25k on after-tax, rolled over to 401k Roth (mega backdoor). I only think about other investments after maxing my 401k. I'm not saving on HSA yet but this is also a good option.
Backdoor Roth
What is back door Roth !
Yes, can someone explain this please?
