Do you really like or hate Tesla? What do you think?

I found Tesla as a company or the stock, together with its cars, is really polarizing. Many people love it and think it is the future; while there are people who hate it, doubt it or think it will go bankrupt.

I am a Tesla fan and I do find a lot of Tesla fans or Tesla favorite videos on YouTube from many people but I am wondering if I am just living in a bubble (thanks to YouTube recommendation system). There are many analyst on TV networks saying Tesla is hugely overvalued as well.

I think the cars are boring and they only exist because of government subsidies. They don’t have a real market.

      “Don’t have a real market”

Tesla is severely supply constrained. Model 3 was the best-selling car in the US this quarter by revenue. 5th by volume. This was while constraining options to only premium models ($49k+) and geographically to North America. Also, the option to lease has not even opened up. Top traded-in vehicles were civics, accords, camrys, priuses — not just other vehicles in the premium sedan market like BMWs, Mercedes, etc.

Really simple question - What do you think happens when we introduce the mid-range, standard-range, allow leasing, produce in China??

The point is that Tesla lies all the time. Their CEO just got busted for lying about having a takeover offer.

🤷🏻‍♂️ then don’t believe what he says. Investors have the right to make their own assessments.

Nobody is forced to invest in or short the company. Short sellers were just crying because they lost money on an extremely volatile stock.

The stock also drops often from unrelated news or FUD - I don’t cry about it, as it’s a pretty widely known risk.

Yea I don’t believe what they say. I think they are riding a massive hype train.

Just because there’s a lot of hype and the CEO exaggerates the numbers doesn’t mean that it won’t be a wildly successful company.

Nice, I don’t exactly disagree on the hype train. I just think that the hype train has a lot of steam and a compelling path forward.

What do you think will stop this hype train?

The company has reaffirmed several times that the company will not go to markets or banks to raise capital... in both the Q2 and Q3 earnings calls.

profitability = self-sustaining. Aka don’t need to borrow money.

This point is obsolete, so what else can stop the hype train?

When I was considering joining the company and started researching, I started to realize that the quality of arguments from the short seller side were severely lower quality and more superficial than the bullish arguments.

Take for example the comment from @ijyA68 above. Posting a link referring to an FBI probe that is investigating whether Elon projected too ambitious numbers when launching the Model 3.

Really? Is that a crime? Should SpaceX be investigated for claiming to be able to land rocket boosters and failing 3 times before doing it successfully? Never new that setting and building hype around ambitious goals was a crime.

I’m not saying I agree with the point of criminal activity having been done. I highly doubt it. However, as a public company it is definitely illegal to mislead investors if you know damn well you can’t hit numbers you’re putting out there. It’s going to be near impossible to prove anything unless there’s a trail of people saying they’re purposely lying.

It’s super team dependent. Very similar to Amazon in culture (I used to work there). Production-related teams work long hours but have high propensity for growth, much like Amazon FC teams.

My team is great and it’s really cool to be working on the projects that we are. TC is not that great and many people come to Tesla for the resume bullet point and move on quickly, which is fine.

Yes, false and misleading statements are a crime under regulations,17 CFR 240.14a-9 - False or misleading statements. That's partly why Musk paid a $20,000,000 fine for him self + the 20,000,000 fined to Tesla. Comparing private and public companies equally is a fallacy.

What do you think about the other short seller arguments re: upcoming debt payments, reliance on federal tax credits to prop up demand, competition catching up, quality issues. Are those arguments also flimsy?

Unfortunately both sides hype the news cycle too much. I wish there was sober source of intelligence that analyzed Tesla as a business and its products.

      1. Debt payments. Tesla would have no issues raising capital to pay off. We decided not to, and reaffirmed this decision by posting a profit this qtr. The convertible bonds due in March have a convert price of $360. If we hit that we’re good.
      2. Many customers traded in vehicles that were far more than 10k cheaper (when new) than the M3 sticker price. This incentive is only for US, and international markets have their own incentives.
      3. Point to one potential competitor... Daimler? BMW? GM? Please look at specs that are inferior to vehicles that we released over 3 years go.
      4. Quality issue is there, no doubt. We are still a young company for manufacturing cars, but this is clearly not negatively impacting demand. The tech and software far outweigh the negative effects.
      Oct 27, 2018
  • I traded in my $14k Ford Fusion (price when I originally bought it - I got $3600 on the trade) for a $65k Dual Motor Model 3. And then I spent $8k getting it a satin XPEL wrap and ceramic coating. Tonight the software that will let it start suggesting lane changes (and initiating them, with my approval) to navigate the highway system, interchanges, etc, is going live for North America. The hype is real.

Have had 3 Teslas so far (2 x MX, 1 x MS)... love all of them. I used to drive Audi and Porsche, but have never looked back since we got our first Tesla. Not sure about the company, but the cars are truly amazing to drive

Elon Musk is a terrible CEO and is delusional

Massively overvalued and won't ever truly be a mass-market manufacturer

Sick of the fan boys who drink the kool aid

Sooner or later the stock will plummet when people realize how overvalued it is and I think it'll be the first domino that triggers other tech stocks tumbling for real

If Musk wasn't the CEO and they stuck with being a luxury car manufacturer (which is truly what they are) I wouldn't have a problem

Fb took 3 years to deliver a dumb video calling device (Portal) and Tesla built and scaled the manufacturing of a new car in the same time. Now tell me who’s an awesome CEO?

alt_qq, we can forgive ignorance if you promise to educate yourself one day. It’s clear you don’t know Tesla or Elon. Making assumptions like Tesla being a “luxury car manufacturer” confirms it. Elon doesn’t care if Tesla makes money except to appease shareholders. And Tesla is only making cars to further our mission. The reason Elon, and JB, got involved with Tesla all those years ago is they saw what no one else is seeing. Tesla is first and foremost a battery company. Now, with that in mind, take a look at how our mission statement has changed from, say, four years ago, to now. And then see if you can see what we’re really about.

Vast amounts of vapor ware: $35k for the model 3, doesn't exist. Solar tiles, doesn't exist. Battery swapping at recharge stations, doesn't exist nor do the cars support it. Auto pilot, doesn't exist. In fact almost every major ground breaking statement is a lie.

Tesla are doing cool stuff, there's a lot to be admired. Musk personally has done a lot of cool shit, assembled some great teams and businesses. But he's a bit of a dick and probably needs a vacation.

Interesting, since they are made of aluminum and steel mostly, compared to most other cars which *are* made of plastic for the most part. Perhaps the paint color?

Thanks for the reply. Regarding the subsides, every electric automaker enjoys this, not only Tesla. Many countries have similar policies actually. (The subsides is going away for Tesla actually, because it is about to reach the gov’s limit of 20K EV sold I believe. Other companies is not close to this limit yet ).
