Do you regret going into gaming?

Or do you love it? Personally I feel passion for the work I do and I have aspirations within the industry. As much as there are challenges, I also don’t regret my choice. Wondering how others feel?

I’m at Amazon Game Studios now and making FAANG money while making games. Life is good.

Seattle. There are several games in development. There’s one engineering position open on the team I’m on.

My only regret going into gaming was that at Disney it basically went away: some of my best memories were contributing to Disney Infinity!

  • It's hard. I can't regret it because my career has grown a lot in the last 10 years. I sometimes feel it would had been easier in a different tech industry but ultimately here I am and I've been part of four AAA games. I wouldn't change that for anything. But sometimes, some days I do feel like I hate this industry and would like to do something else. I think I am fairly compensated (pretty close to a FAANG TC ) but I am the exception not the rule, I have played my cards and politics better than others.

    • Depends a lot on the studio or location. A game studio pays more than a central team.

Mind sharing your tc? Before amazon I was a senior/principal engineer at a small/medium sized game company (around 60 employees). My TC there was 195k all cash. There was a profit sharing plan for when we released games, but that wasn’t very profitable. Now at amazon as an sde3, I’m making 315k TC.

    • where are you located? I am in Austin, SSE-1 and my TC is 210k. 150k base / 30k cash bonus / 30k stock

Seattle. 210 is great for Austin. Cost of living up here keeps going up.
      May 15
    • yeah cost of living in Austin is still pretty good and my TC goes a long way. But like I said in my post, I'm the exception in the industry.

If I hadn’t done it I always would have wondered “what if”
But now that I’m in it I wonder “what the fuck”

I don't regret it at all and hope to spend more time working on games again soon. Maybe our experience Riot is different than other studios, so I have not felt burnt out working on games.
