Started working with amazon 6 months back and was mentally prepared to have a hectic WLB. Had heard rumours about the “toxic” culture. On the contrary, I have had a good work life balance, have learned a lot and I like the fact that my team and manager have high standards for the products we own. I am aware 6 months is not much, but thats my impression of the first 6 months. people with bad experiences would definitely disagree, but I also wanted to put out there the side of someone with a good experience!
I on the same boat as you. Liking my experience so far and haven’t experienced any of the toxic culture yet. Fingers crossed 🤞
🤞yes!
Are you tech?
It’s a huge company, therefore WLB is highly team dependent. Among my friends, half have great WLB, half can’t wait to leave. YMMV
Do most you know at microsoft have a good WLB?
We must look at the managers for good or bad wlb. It's their job
Most teams have good WLB outside of AWS and builder tools. But toxic management and politics is pretty much omnipresent which is what takes a toll of your mental health. As an L4 you will never be exposed to this. 1+ year at L5 and higher levels have to deal with this more.
reputation is a trailing indicator and there were a lot of bad stories in the past, last few years have seen better reviews

6 months isn't enough time to see fully through all the cracks. Wait until you start working on cross team/org projects, then all the bs and red tape starts becoming noticeable, but that's true for any big company. You can still have good WLB if you don't let it affect you outside of the office and figure out how to find middle ground when necessary.
