How long can someone stay an IC5 or E5? 3 years? 5? 10? I'm starting as an IC5 in October and i'm wondering what is the runway. At my last company, HR kept track of avg number of years in a grade and the further you got without promoting to the next level, it starts to raise flags for your manager. "Why isnt this person being promoted? What's wrong with them or is it you?" Is Facebook a culture like that? Or can I just chill and do a great job in my level without thinking about having to go to the next?
Facebook is up or out until E5. At E5, you are safe as long as you meet expectations.
Out of curiosity, why you wouldn't want to get promoted?
Its not a "rest and vest" for me. if I like what I do, I'm great at it, and like my scope, why should I be forced to go to the next level?I have always been very good at finding new things to work on within my level that allow me to grow.
wish i could get forced to accept a promotion
Probably he wants to rest and vest
that would be nice
The expectations of an IC6 are way above those of an IC5. Somebody may be killing it as IC5 and the same type of work would lead to “meets all expectations” when promoted. I am en EM and have a couple of ICs who are great IC5 but just don’t have the leadership skills required of a highly successful IC6, and so they have decided to stay as IC5s. And that is totally OK.
As an EM what's your take on all this WLB issues people keep talking about? As a manager do you agree?
Now that I think more about it, I didn't take into account that Facebook may not have a lot of "average time in level" Trend data yet for their employees.
Thank you, that's the info I was looking for.
Curious. What’s the expectations of an IC5 and IC6?
It should be the standard difference between Sr SWE and Staff SWE. Sr is the first level that has a little bit leadership requirements, e.x leading projects, project planning, solving blockers, motivating teammates (on some extent). It’s more of a mindset change that you are now thinking more and more how can you elevate the people around you and the team. Staff is one level above and a lot of these leadership traits/mindset requirements will be on par with EM1. In addition, technically you also need to bring impact outside of your own team to the larger organization or multiple groups.
You’ll only get forced if you are clearly at the next level already.
A lot of people at faang never go beyond l5
If you had to guess, what percent stay I5 or under?
