Got return offer from Amazon, and also got an offer from Microsoft. MSFT gave a much higher package (170k) in Seattle. I am happy about the number, but also worried. I will use a lot C# and may learn some non-marketable skills. Also, many people especially those in open source communities just don’t like Microsoft. Not sure if it’s a good idea to join MSFT
Depends on the team and specific skills used but IMO msft has a very slight edge.
Both will get you in the door for your next jump. Go with what's going to give you the better learning opportunities.
Both are win-win for getting into FNG
You’re trying to evaluate the company based on other people’s perception. I’d say join based your own perception. Good, satisfying work trumps everything else IMO.
I think both are big companies so itll vary by team. Disregarding that, if youre junior level microsoft, if senior level amazon.
Why micro for Juniors?
Weak
very very similar, i’d decide based on TC and team
Dont worry about stupid crap like that. C# isnt terribly different from java and if you cant figure out different language constructs you dont deserve to be working at either place. Not only that but there are tons of teams using java and or open source tools like docker and kubernetes if that's what you want to do, either way, the concepts and practices you learn at ms will be useful regardless of where you go in your career. Most other companies build all kinds of internal crap on top of linux etc so it's not like all of them are completely homogenous either. Microsoft is the #1 contributor to open source. Most people that dont like Microsoft have no idea what its about or the changes that have been made under satya Nadella. At any rate, you will have no shortage of future offers working at msft. I've never known anyone to have an issue getting any interviews externally and there are literally hundreds of teams internally, doing pretty much anything you could imagine with software. Usually, if people dont take a ms offer it's because of compensation. You have a decent number you are happy with, there is no reason not to try out ms for a while if the job is a good fit.
Depends where you're going. Either way the two companies are both respected and well known, so you can't really go wrong. Keep in mind that the team is important. Someone working on an interesting project at Amazon beats someone working on something lame at Microsoft, and vice versa. Try to work out which part of either company you'd be joining. Both have cool teams, and both have lame ones. Open source is warming to MSFT. The Gates/Ballmer era is over. We're now the single biggest contributor to open source in the world. It'll take time though for the reputation to catch up, but it'll get there.
Microsoft’s perceived inferiority will subside once it hires in-house recruiters and gets rid of the lousy 3rd party agencies, and improves their gatekeeper concept in the interviews (like Amazon’s bar raiser). I just interviewed for a general Senior SWE role at Google, and next for a particular spot at Microsoft which looks like a far more varied and challenging spot compared to being a body at Google. But I am very senior and hard to please with tech jobs. I can’t take just anything — Amazon seemed promising but turned out to not be the right fit (though I ended up on a great team).
I've never dealt with anything other than 1st party recruiters as an employee or manager. I've heard that some groups do 8se third party recruiters but the idea is that those are just for initial vetting. What's wrong with the AA concept at ms? I've been an AA and I think it works pretty well. Its stopped a lot of bad hires and at least from personal experience helped out some marginal candidates that have been good performers.
If anything, Amazon s hire all fire all policy suggests their insecurity
Both are same tier and will get you an interview pretty much anywhere, but actually getting the job is all you.

i have worked at both and believe both are good on resume but Amazon might have an edge. I dont think however it should be a deciding factor for you. Think about which type of work makes you happier.
Amazon has more exciting work, but I may choose for money. Keep leetcoding, and jump to another company in a few years
