I'm considering a move from NYC to SF. Almost everybody seems to hate SF on Blind. But it surely can't be that bad. There are some things going for SF. IMO the major cons are: 1. Rent/Housing Prices 2. Homeless Situation 3. Homogeneous Crowd (Lot of tech) + Lack of women 4. Mediocre Public Transport 5. Weather? (as per some) Some pros (for me) are: 1. Better(best?) tech jobs 2. Access to nature/hikes/ocean 3. Weather(>NYC) 4. Laid back culture(as opposed to NYC's pretentiousness) What in your opinion are some pros of living in SF? If there's a significant con I've missed out, please do bring it up, but let's try and keep the hate to a minimum.
Have you visited the city itself?
Yes u have, multiple times! Haven't stayed longer than a week though
I moved from nyc to sf 2.5 years ago, all your points are valid. If your are outdoorsy and have a car out here, it’s unparalleled. 30 mins min and up to 3 hours and you are in 5 different biomes in any direction (surfing, hiking skiing climbing, camping all great). Other con for me was it’s a tiny city, and very quiet if you like going out. There’s just less going on culturally. Homelessness is concentrated in tenderloin, soma, downtown. If that bothers you there’s other hoods you can live in. Also pizza and bagels here are trash.
I am outdoorsy and that's one of the main reasons I'm trying to move. I've had enough pizza and bagels to last me 5 years!
Absolute trash is right on bagels and pizza. It’s shocking really. Everything else this fine fellow says is also 110% correct
The most important question: are you single? If yes, NYC. If no, closer call.
Absolutely deserves all the hate. It is a disgusting city and it’s unbelievable that officials have let it get to this point. I’ve loved her almost a decade and it was a completely different city when I first moved here. Still had its quirks but it wasn’t so literally dirty and the homeless wasn’t nearly as out of control as it is now. Weather is by far better than NY Obviously more startups are in Silicon Valley It’s still pretentious although I’m not sure how so in relation to New York. Surrounding areas are beautiful, but that’s only on the weekends. You still have to deal with the filth Monday-Friday. Public transportation is sub par compared to New York but most don’t take muni. Also helps that Jump has launched here. I use those more than Uber now. Plenty of women you just have to be where they are. Majority of attractive women are in the marina neighborhood. Housing/rent prices are out of control but it may not be that much more than New York.
Wtf are you talking about dude.. the mission, 10th and market, divisadero, Hayes valley and the dogpatch are all way way nicer than they were 10 years ago. The city has gentrified tremendously in that time. The difference is that 10 years ago you probably wouldn’t have even considered living in any of those neighborhoods because you’d likely get stabbed. San Francisco has been a gritty city for decades, it’s just getting more of a focus since Silicon Valley has moved north.
Gritty city yes, filthy city no. You’re the only Person I’ve ever heard say it’s just as dirty now as it was a decade ago. Gentrification has nothing to do with the literal shit and needles on sidewalks everywhere in the city
Also if job is in SF then good, otherwise the commute can be painful!
Would be working and living in SF
It feels like a lot of the SF haters are bitter shut-ins who would hate on whatever city they lived in. Rent: no worse then NYC Homeless situation: sad, but don’t live in the tendernob, soma, northern part of the mission and it’s not a big deal. Homogeneous crowd: lots of people work in tech, but lots don’t Lack of women: this one is silly. Plenty of women in the city. Public transportation: not as good as NYC, but I think it’s great. Second best in the country IMO. Weather: Can be outdoors year round. Except for a week or two during Indian summers, it is never uncomfortablely hot. Never too cold. Yeah it’s a bummer July and August can be foggy most days, but can’t have it all. The city isn’t perfect, but I love it.
I was in SF in July and that last time I saw so much fog was a few years back in North India!
I’m not bitter. At one point I loved it. But it’s seriously filthy. There is human shit on sidewalks no matter the neighborhood. Who would not hate that?! I live in marina and the homeless have definitely increased here. I used to see 1-2 a week. Now it’s about 10 a day. Not exaggerating.
SF is pretentious too
I moved here two months ago with my girlfriend. We absolutely love it. The weather is amazing and you really can’t beat the fact that you can be on the beach or in the mountains in 30 minutes. We are not big on clubbing/partying scene so don’t know if that is a big negative.
SF isn’t homogeneous. It is racially diverse (whites are less than 50% of the population), most people don’t work in tech, and 50.8% female.
