My turn to ask something for friend haha. Question is titled pretty much. If we have such people here, are you happy/ unhappy with the move?
Bad transition if you don't like talking to people. Otherwise, the work is more interesting than just being a code monkey. You may or may not make more money than being an SDE depending on where you go. Amazon SAs are not incentivised and makes less than SDEs in the same level. However, most SAs love their job because the work is dynamic. Make sure your friend has the character to become an SE/SA.
Depends on your sales team and what you are tasked with selling.
still deciphering
It is very interesting work if you enjoy coding and have the itch to solve real world customer problems using your software. If you enjoy building the software itself more, then stay as a core engineer. Btw, even though there is 'sales' in the title, you are not a sales person. You are partnering with sales person to prove value of your software for customer production scenarios.
Seems like an old post. But after going through blind .. i got to know that there is an actually sales engineer role. But will there be any remark on your profile in future if you to move to swe? Because there are not a lot of positions in sales engineering
Job is great, pay might be higher starting off but will cap off soon because you are a cost center in software firms. Sa typically don't get commission.
don't do that. why would you do that?
I know many people who did that. Traveling, sales, commission, budget and less pressure are some points which may be plus or minus depending on the person
As a solution architect, i’ve seen people make the jump from dec to sales Engineer / Solutions Architect. The toughest part is the social interaction. You’re encouraged to engage your customers as much as possible. For some, it helps them get out of their shell and others realize it’s not their thing.
Best decision i ever made was moving from principal eng for product groups to tech consultant (same company). Would never go back. Projects and people change often, keeps things interesting and i still code regularly. Personally found the people friendlir internally.
I had a friend go from test Eng to sales engineer because she likes traveling and talking to people.
