I am 32 and have little over 100k in savings and no masters degree. I know this is way behind my peer group everywhere. I am not an engineer anymore but I have a degree in engineering. I recently interviewed with LNKD/FB/Uber. I made it to the onsite for everyone but didn't get through. I know the lack of sunlight could be the reason, but I don't feel any motivation to do anything. Feel like I am just a robot executing a routine.
Take a good vacation and figure out what you want to do next . Be a beast and work towards it . I went through similar experience. I would be happy to chat offline if you like too.
Yes. Going through that right now
Two opposite people.. I love clouds and rain it makes me super happy and I hate literally hate sunlight it gives me a headache.. I know people go to parks and places in sun but I would rather prefer cloudy and gloomy weather all day everyday.. Btw I am in 30’s too non eng and I have worked for Google Facebook LinkedIn Apple Uber to name a few.. My savings are around same like yours.. What motivates me is when I walk across the streets of sf and I see homeless people lying and crying that god blessed me and I don’t have to think about where my next meal would come from..
Go travel.
I feel like our focus and desires shift once we hit the big 3-0. What used to give us joy and meaning doesn’t really cut it anymore. Maybe take a bit of time off and go on a vacation or volunteer doing something meaningful. For example I’ve always wanted to do Habitat for Humanity.
++ , starting to excercise more and waiting for the sun. Also prepping to move to an area with more sun.
Donate and volunteer at homeless shelters, food banks, etc. There are plenty and it's the right thing to do as we techies are the ones who displaced them from their homes in most urban cores.
"I know this is way behind my peer group everywhere." No, it's not, and comparisons like that will destroy your happiness. You have six figures in the bank and an engineering degree. That's way more than most Americans will ever have, especially as young as 30.
Change something! Also the above average 30 year old in the us has 60k saved. The average? 7k. Way to be killing it!!! You’re just not part of the ultra rich elite. But don’t feel bad. They were born into it! Change something. And keep changing things till you’re less sad. And be okay with being sad.
Not everyone was. I started out my career with 2k in the bank and a wife to support. And we scraped and saved for well over a decade. Just because someone has money doesn’t mean they were born into it.
I don’t think over 100k is ultra rich. It’s just top 2-5% percent for the age group. Which is great and awesome. The only other way to be higher is start your own thing that you own or be born into it. Getting to over 100k and not being born into money is an awesome achievement.

Get some help from a friend or a therapist if you think you may be depressed. You may want to exercise more (for endorphins) and spring is here so if it’s northern depression related you should feel better soon. I have a triweekly (every 3rd week) reminder on my calendar to “sharpen the saw” (reference is Covey’s 7 habits book). It is a reminder to break the routine and meet up with friends, or work on a side project, etc to stay fresh.
