I just feel that the only reason people come here is because of the hog paying jobs. But everything else is ridiculous. I'm not comfortable of the thought of sending my future kids to school here. School shootings aren't a shocker anymore, gun violence in general is ridiculous here. Healthcare is a joke. Can't even say politically we're safe because our ridiculous politicians are making us both a target and a laughing stock. I grew up here, I'm a citizen, I used to love this country, but living 10 years abroad and viewing it from the outside, and then coming back and viewing everything from the inside, I can't help but ask what the fuck went wrong here. The bigger question I ask myself, do I want to bring my fiance here, raise my future kids here, when I feel threatened more than I feel safe. Is it worth it? Are these high paying salaries worth it? I dont know anymore. I don't know if other feel the same way, but I'm sick and tired of this country.
Unfortunately, US is one of the easiest countries to immigrate to improve your life among 1st world countries. Try to go to European countries, definitely harder to come and become permanent resident
Soon you will discover the rest of the world is just in the same diship condition, no less. If you think EU countries are great, go ahead :) having known a few Europeans (a Germany, an Irish, and a Swiss), they left for economic reason (of course). But they were much happier here than back home because of the ideal politics there. Nothing gets done well, and even the “liberal” legislations are jokes to them. I also grew up in the States as an immigrant. The best part of American is the spirit of taking vacation. There is a mutual respect among employers that employees deserve vacation, other than legally employers must provide vacation. Going abroad, esp in Asia, work hours are terrible and foreigners are treated like museum displays, some curious creatures, which can be very uncomfortable.
Spirit of taking vacation in a country where your colleagues are gasping when you taken 2 weeks uninterrupted vacation? I can only laugh at your post. Go live in Europe if you want to know what spirit of taking vacation is
Lol Pirogi and shammer. you have no idea what you are talking about. Don’t assume people have not lived outside the U.S. I had and I mentioned those remarks because they were native. So take your words back. I am also laughing at your posts.
I have contemplated that and decided for now those salaries are worth the risk, then when it is school time find an alternative. It is not the obsession with Guns that worries me, it is the lack of collective social responsibility (to not sell to people with mental illness, not locking it up safely, etc.) that baffles me! If people want to use the guns then need to be collectively responsible for safety of others... but I digress.
Are you fucking kidding me? 1. School shootings? So do you prefer a 0.00001% probability of a school shooting or If you’re in France/Spain/Italy - a 20% chance of being pick pocketed China / India - 100% chance to have symptoms due to air polllutiln. Scandinavia - 100% chance of 50% or greater taxation Singapore / HK - 100% chance you’ll never be able to afford to buy a decent house Look, I’ve lived in 4 continents. I know what’s out there. Europe - shitty economy. Terrible taxes. Healthcare takes forever. Asia - developing, a lot of opportunity but outside of Sg and hk, don’t really need White ppl anymore as much and you’ll never be doing core strategic work unless you join a local company and then it’s shitty culture. China India really bad air. Africa - not a great place to live and work. The nice places because there are so few are ridiculously expensive Australia - high expense for what you pay for and high tax. Few high paying jobs. Pretty good lifestyle. Probably the best alternative to the us. South America - still developing. Way more dangerous than the us. The us is really the best place in the world to live if what you want is: 1. High paying job 2. Comfortable and big home 3. Convenient amenities 4. World class schools both public and private. When i say public schools - i don’t mean average. I mean our top public schools are the best in the world. In the Bay Area - lynbrook, monta vista, mission San Jose. In Bellevue - Newport high. Universities are the best in the world. Public universities are affordable and the best in the world. We have all sorts of food that you want. Relatively low tax compared to other developed countries. Tell me specifically which country you think is better to live in than the us? And let’s be specific about the us? Silicon Valley? LA? Seattle? I’ve been wherever you’ve talked about. I know. Us is the best in the world as a whole. If you have specific circumstances - then things can be different. Eg. You’re young and Asian Maybe you go to Asia for that Maybe you like really convenient and cheap travel - maybe uoj go to Asia or Europe Those are niches. If we’re speaking in generalities then us is the best.
LOL a 20% chance of being pick pocketed in France? Don't be stupid. But yeah, I'll take the pick picketing over my child getting shot at school any day. Every sane person would. And the tax burden in the US really isn't that low compared to Europe. Do the math.
What about South Korea..i find it better than usa. Also Canada is better option than usa if you don't like or see major culture difference between usa and South Korea. Another good option is Dubai.
Familiarity with your home country contributes to your feeling safer there, I’m sure.
But this is my home country. I'm supposed to feel safe here, forget the country my parents came from I wasn't even 1 when we came here.
Then stop buying into the media hype. Statistically speaking you’re living in one of the safest countries in the world at one of the safest, least violent times in history. http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2013/05/07/gun-homicide-rate-down-49-since-1993-peak-public-unaware/
Totally agree. Most of Europeans I met here (including myself) plan to move back to Europe after a few years. Some already have.
Every country has its pros and cons. If you earn well, the US has some of the best schools and universities in the world to get your kids educated at. Europe has a more balanced way of life but more economic problems and less opportunity for youth. Its not black or white. Also, depends where in the country, what state, which neighborhood, which school etc.
I don’t want to be paid in hog
You’re not alone here. It seems to be a common thread with US expats. The only reason to be here is for the money. As soon as you’re done earning your money or hit you’re number, it’s time to leave. Many US expats I know miss working abroad and want to go back. Germany is probably the most modern country in the world that puts everyone to shame infrastructure wise. Plenty of countries have affordable healthcare and low cost education, and excellent benefits overall. Most of the expats from Europe I know intend to retire back in their home country after earning their money here. The US is probably the worst country to retire in. If you’re wealthy, healthcare will take most , if not all, of your money. If you’re poor you’ll probably never retire since SS often isn’t enough. Apart from the top 10% in society you’ll have a better quality of life outside of the US in some other civilized society. It’s more than just your salary - taxes. You need to look at what get and what you pay for in terms of sick/vacation leave, healthcare, college tuition, preschool/daycare costs, maternity/paternity leave, retirement homes home for your aging parents, etc... These are all expenses your pay which might as well be counted on as taxes. If you account for all of these costs, you’ll find that in 90% of the cases you’re better off living in Western Europe than in the States. The exception being the top 10% income earners like STEM workers.
Germany has very high taxes and euro isn’t doing well so you’re not gonna make tech packages there. Food choice is quite limited outside of Berlin and Munich. Germany is the exception to the rule. Your argument here is selection bias. The people on blind are the top 20% earners. Yes, the average American probably can live a little better if they went to Europe. We’re not average. We went to good schools. We work hard and we want things that aren’t average. Top 20% in us live better than the top 20% of Europe.
Agreed. If you read my full post, I make this exact point.
Be the change you want to see, or leave. It’s simple really.
Be part of thr discussion or leave
You missed my point. Be an advocate for change, or leave. Staying and complaining does nothing. And I find your comment rich with hypocrisy.
