...people go on vacation, and are still checking and replying to their emails, writing code review comments, calling into meetings, and releasing code?
Responding to emails is still okay if there is a real need. But no coding or other activities, please.
If you are working it’s not vacation. Better not be counting that as vacation.
People don’t do that at Facebook. But they definitely do that a lot in weekends which sets up at toxic culture for the team.
People definitely go on vacation using PTO. Except maybe your org is different
Yes. PTO and GTFO!
I call that WFH, work from holiday. Literally, as long as you’re working, you don’t need to take time off. (I won’t say its toxic if my team takes 15 days off a year in the HR system, but actually spending like 50 days with family in Europe or Caribbean, and catching up meetings and code review during night in hotel. This is actually how it works in my team. We basically ask those “half-off” people to do code review or write tests and brainstorming that doesn’t need a block of time.) But for weekends, definitely no.
Their choice.
I often reply to emails when I am away, but I don’t expect others to do the same.

Yes, it sets a bad team culture for expectations. Hell, I even hate code reviews done over the weekend.
