I’ve heard stories. It’s just hard for me to believe since I’ve heard European companies treat their employees much better. I’m thinking of making a switch and I just need to know honestly if it’s a waste of time pursuing Booking.com.
What even is a salty person?
Sweaty people.
Perl
There’s a dude who smells like garlic that I work with and I just want to tell him to take a bath. That’s why I’m salty. I don’t know about the saltiness of others, though.
I know the feeling.
Lol what? I assume this is some inside joke?
Jokes aside... it sucks. BUT it will only suck A LOT after 3 years or something, until you have to deal with the politics (it’s usually more politics and show pony shit than work) Otherwise it is a great place to learn about scale, e-commerce and conversion optimization.
Haha wow. Thanks for the honesty.
It sucks. Also check the review trend line on Glassdoor, it took a dive this year and it’s only recovering with apparent fake reviews from HR. Perl as already mentioned, extreme politics, lots of hiring with subpar management and weird in-house practices led to chaos. I wouldn’t advice you to come.
There’s several, and most are glorious. In the center with all the canals, great views, decent coffee.
European companies in general have more benefits because union work is still present, unlike some of the US, so working fir, say McDonald’s is probably night & day. That kind of perk (salary, health insurance) is typically quite common for tech companies, so it’s less spectacular there. You can notice a big difference in how work is valued: American startups will willingly alit they expect you to work 100h weeks. European startups know it can be either bullshit or destructive. Americans companies survive (in spite of treating employees who they can replace like they are replaceable) on inspirational managers, people who can see improvements where others see failure, etc. An American CEO will always hit a lot of useful, simple button: the Who Are You? to anyone they meet, the opening joke, the elevator pitch. If you raise a problem, they’ll act on it; maybe poorly, but you won’t feel disheartened the first time. It’s not perfect. It feels wooden at times. Glenn, the American CEO of the Holding group behind Booking, formerly Priceline, now Booking Holdings is a good example of that ham-fisted enthusiasm. Middle-management and Senior leadership in Europe is often far from hitting those base skills. Booking’s current CEO is openly described as uninspiring. Glenn once said that if you are here to work 9-to-5, just quit, while Booking was praising how considerate they are of work-life balance. Any good leader would have addressed the discrepancy. So Booking has some really cool projects and some great thought-leaders, several of them the best in their field, management is not ideal. Whether that makes it suck is up to you.
Europe isn’t one big, uniform country. Edit: didn’t mean to be a dick. I think there is a lot of truth in your comment, but the way your portray Europe is idealistic.
It sucks. After two to three years you will realize it. There a few very bad people in leading positions. If you are lucky you will not work with them, if you are not lucky... You can learn a lot, but again after two years you are done with learning so what is left. I don’t know what other options you have but this one is ok for two years max!
glassdoor score for eng in booking is 2.2.

Been at Booking for about three years and so far had a pretty good experience. Yeah some things suck, but that is also everywhere. Overall, I’d recommend it to everyone as a good place to work. On the other hand, You’re definitely going to stumble upon lots of salty people here, so maybe it ain’t the best place to ask for guidance :/
Why are there “lots of salty people” there?
they mean on Blind. Anonymous forums are salt mines
