Dogs in the office: heaven or hell?

Nov 18, 2018 47 Comments

Many top tech companies pitch bringing dogs to work as a perk. For multiple reasons, I personally cannot stand working in environments with dogs, and avoid pursuing opportunities with these companies. Sadly this precludes me from considering some of the best companies: Facebook, Google, Netflix, etc.

I’m curious, does your employer allow dogs? Do you think this is good or bad? I can accept that I may be in the minority with my feelings towards canines. I wonder if this dog friendly culture will ever change in the valley, and if it’s as prevalent in other parts of the US?

Some religions consider dogs “unclean”, but still a weird question.

People are so sensitive! He just do not like dogs in workplace , what is the big deal?!
You are probably just a creepy dog owner that you want everyone to love your dog, guess what? Get over it!

And I don’t “hate” dogs — I just don’t like them in the workplace. You do and that’s fine — I’m genuinely happy for you that you can work somewhere that gives you this perk (in your eyes). Sadly I think it is all too common for dog owners who love dogs to fail to understand that not all people share their feelings. Can’t we all just respect each other a little more?

Actually you can easily find many locations that has no dog. Like NY offices. etc.

Very few people have actual dog allergies that would be set off by well groomed dogs in office HVAC environments.

      Drama queens.

I don’t think people who feel this way are being drama queens. Reasons to dislike working with dogs: noise, allergies, fear of dogs (perhaps due to a childhood trauma, etc).

Facebook doesn't have dogs. Amazon did and it was annoying. I like dogs but don't love entitled dog owners. I worked for a small start up and all three of us brought our tiny old dogs to work every day and it was amazing.

I wonder if this has changed? I remember visiting the old Facebook campus around 2010 and I am pretty sure I saw multiple dogs in the office.

I think you’re way overthinking this - unless you’re allergic. It’s not like a 1:1 dog ratio. They’re sprinkled around and won’t get in your way from what I’ve been exposed to.

I work at Google and I have a dog. On an average day I see zero dogs. There are dog-free areas, typically created when someone cannot be around dogs. They are never allowed near food and bathrooms. That's it. I'd say you are more exposed to dogs on the street than in Google.

I bring my dog to work once or twice a year, when I can't leave him at home.

Do you happen to know if dogs are welcome at all (or most) Google offices, or primarily just in CA or the US in general?
      Nov 18, 2018
    • OP
Also, for the dog free areas, how is this communicated / enforced? I’ve been pitched on this concept by recruiters, but I was skeptical how effective such measures would be.
      Nov 18, 2018
    • Google jumb
I don't. But my point is that you can request your building to become dog-free, and it will be. No questions asked, no judgements. Simple as that.
      Nov 18, 2018
    • Google jumb
The entire building and all doors have clear signs that the area is dog free zone. No clue how it is enforced, never took a dog there. Probably folks would just point to the sign and ask the person to leave.

MS does not allow dogs except service animals. I absolutely love my dog but I dont think dogs belong in a workspace. Especially open workspaces where there is already enough cacophony.

  • I love dogs. But never really worked where they were welcome. That being said I don’t think I’d be thrilled with bigger dogs near my work area. The singular reason is big dog farts clear the room. It’s enough that my next door Chinese coworker slurps and smacks his gums with horrendous eating habits at his desk. I can tolerate only so many unpleasantries at a time.

But it would be cool to see dogs at work.

It is fine if they don’t bark at everyone but some do. My former employer allowed it but not my current one.

Isn’t having a dog (pet) is a way of fulfilling your satisfaction? Seriously, why do you need a pet if that pet lives only the way you want it to live? Instead, making them stay home, take to work, feed with some bullshit pet food. Don’t be selfish, let the animal live their lives the way they like.

Think I didn’t? Also, we have a pet in our office (of an engineer from another company that we share the office with) and I can see that poor dog suffering. Hanging all day in the office, trying to play, or live the way he likes to be. But guess what? The engineer is sitting and coding >12hr a day. I think that dog deserves a better life.

Probably he is an outlier. Most folks do good by their pets.

I remembered a movie - dad buys a red car for his son thinking he will like it, but son says “dad I don’t like red”. So who said if someone does good for their pets is necessarily good for them? Probably keeping birds in cages is the best example of all.
      Nov 18, 2018
    • Rockwell Collins bellch6148
Doing good by their pets implies giving them safe living environment, taking care of their physical and emotional needs, allowing their own space as and when they need. All I wanted to say is it's ok to deliberately take care of pets if we can rather than leaving it to chance thinking that they will survive.

I love dogs. I have a dog. I wish we could sometimes bring dogs to the office at Amazon in the Bay Area. But.... when I am up in Seattle there are just too many damned dogs in the offices. I have seen a dog drop a deuce in lobby of Day 1 and another take a huge leak right in front of badge swipe. Lots of office areas are overrun with dogs. It does seem like dog friendliness can go a bit too far.

If a company said you can bring pets that implies they made some sort of arrangement like pet free areas for folks who have issues. If not you should talk to HR. Just don't shit on your colleagues for bringing pets. It's their right if pets are allowed.
